Then don't go or watch the game if you're going to be offended.

They will probably try to put the blame on one club and Millwall always seem to be that club but the truth It's sang by fans of all clubs at England games. They are not just Chelsea or Millwall it's England! No club has more power than any of the other clubs. In fact England fans that go to the games are known to have a large element that follow lower league clubs that's why you will always see St George flags with with small clubs like Exeter city or Aldershot on them. It is sang at every game England play and even the official fan band who play the drum and flute play the no surrender tune so that fans can join in at every game. It's a dated song yet you will still get morons sing it. There will be little trouble at the game it's at Wembley so it will be more family oriented. It will be a pretty non event if it was in Ireland or in the world cup then there would be trouble as the Loyalists would travel to stir things up. If Woy thinks England will listen to him he's in dream world.

I've genuinely yet to hear any one person just randomly burst into chanting of "ooh ah up the ra" :97:

You do realise that particular phrase is only included when the singing of a SONG by the Wolfe Tones (yes, a song that has been released and sold in popular music shops all over the world).

Of course, but I'd still separate a modern song like Celtic symphony from traditional ballads.

Probably not the best example I could have used for my whole song/chant dichotomy argument though, I'll grant you! :smiley-laughing002:

The only way I could see Irish fans singing any song with deliberate reference to the provisional IRA is in retaliation to anti-Irish songs sung by the English fans.

I very much doubt we'll see either for a Wembley friendly tbh. Irish national team fans very rarely sing songs relating to the IRA anyways, they support the football team, they don't see it as a chance to make the world known of their political views or ideologies.

I'd be extremely disappointed if either side sang any songs with the intention of offending either side, nor do I expect it.

It should be a good game with a good atmosphere.

    And why is that? :97:

It's about as traditional as you can get - especially in the sense that it has been about since before I was even thought about.

Really? I presumed it was from the late 80's/early 90's, distinctly remember one of the band members wearing the centenary top in the video, although the song itself might have been penned a wee bit earlier.

Either way though, it hardly compares to nationalist ballads like Amhrán na bhFiann that date from the early 20th century.

Think what might be worrying the English FA is the "No Surrender to the IRA" chant has started to creep back in at international games after having died away for a good few years.
In the 90's it was believed to be used as a signal for the BNP/C18 mobs to start kicking off.
Few different reasons been gave for it coming back, one being that a lot of the banning orders dished out to known hooligans at that time are now up.

Actually your right. Just checked there, it was written in 87', and not the 78'ish period I was thinking about.

    Why?

It's hardly the fault of the composers that they were not born earlier than you would like.

It is a traditional Irish/folk/rebel song.

Aye, as I said, bad example.

My songs/chant argument still stands in a general football context, I just presumed there were one or two generic pro-IRA chants that were fairly prevalent.

Nah, none of that happens now really.

Nobody gives it the old "P-i, P-i, P-ira!", or anything like that anymore.

Even though there was * all wrong with it :86:

Hopefully neither set of fans will get involved in this.

Football's a funny old game. 22 millionaires play against each other then have a drink and chat after the match while the fans of the teams pay good money to hurl abuse at each other, then argue over who offended who the most.
