So why do you think certain breeds have gained such a rep? I don't necessarily disagree btw.

Could dogs survive in the wild nowadays?

Its quite sad that a wild animal has been domesticated to sit around peoples homes probably bored out its nut and never getting to act free as it would in the wild. Dogs probably feel like human prisoners, unless they are allowed to do something - eat, go for a walk, do the toilet, they are locked in their "cell".

I like dogs and would get one if I thought I had the time to look after it properly. Unfortunately the worst owners neglect them and treat them like crap so it is inevitable a few will snap.

This is correct up until a point. However, at the end of the day, a dog is a meat eating wild animal that has been domesticated and trained by humans over a period of years. Their instincts are still within their DNA.

Dogs are in the wild just now and survive perfectly fine?

If you mean would a domestic pet, released back into the wild, have a chance of surviving amongst non-domesticated animals the answer is purely common sense - of course it wouldn't.

Humans are highly evolved intelligent beings (save for Govan) and throughout history have used animals for their own personal gain. It's natural for us to have dogs or cats or hamsters for whatever reason we see fit.

'Dangerous dogs' should be banned. People continuously try and blame the owner and not the dog - when was the last time a Jack Russel or a Schnauzer mauled a baby to death? Surely nutters own them too?

Now I wait for a reply with a link from 30 million years ago about a dog not in the dangerous category mauling a baby. Please don't. It would have been a one off; every month a child is being injured by a dangerous breed of dog.

All dogs have the potential to be dangerous. Apart from the tiny wee ones who wouldn't really be able to harm most humans.

In that scenario do you not have to wonder why the parents are leaving their baby alone with a dangerous dog ?

There are clearly some type of dogs that are more aggressive than others. There are also some built to do more damage than others. I don't see why anyone would chose to own a more aggressive dog than a less aggressive dog.

It seems to come down to a sub-culture thing. You don't see many young guys out walking their poodles in council estates.

Introduce dog licences and control who owns them.

    :50: agree with this.

If the dog is trained right you shouldn't have a problem with it.
Regarding the ones that attack babies, the parents shouldn't be leaving their kid alone with the dog.

As a postie, i've walked into gardens and been confronted with boxers, staffies and mastifs. Ones that look like they'd eat you in a second. They're usually really friendly.
I've only ever been bit by a collie and a moanie faced wee lhasa apso

I wont have a dog or any pets, even though everyone with pets thinks they are happy and probably safer than they would be in the wild. For all we know a dog we assume is happy in a nice home being kept clean, being well fed and warm and safe and thinking they enjoy it could hate it as their brains are wired up to chase and hunt small animals, roll about in dirt to mask their smell and go about prowling for male/female dogs to pump them and they are denied all that their whole lives.

Probably due to the people who most commonly own then. Think about how many arseholes you know that are a dog owner & I would hazard a guess 80-90% own one of these supposed dangerous breeds.

    What breeds are dangerous ?

    Doberman, Boxer, Pitbull etc.

Don't even try and defend Boxers: an unprovoked Boxer mauled my dogs ear off last year - the owner of the dog was an elderly women.

Used to know a Gamey who thought the best way to train a dog was to kick the * out of it as a pup, after that it would do as it was told.
Now he is one of the voices telling anyone who will listen that docking is not cruel, with people like this is it any wonder that some dogs turn vicious:31:

Etc isn't very specific. Breed is your dog ? Was the boxer off it's lead ?

Just to clarify Sween. How would who could or could not have a dog be assessed ? Is it purely their previous record in relation to owning dogs ?

It's a Yorkie. My dog was on the lead and the Boxer wasn't. Just came sprinting over and pounced on my dog.

All falls on the owner. They're animals and require training. Some people are too lazy, or ill-disciplined, to teach the animal how to behave.
