    Just cant get enough

How much money does a club get for just being involved in the EPL nowadays? Was reading the other day that the clubs getting promoted this season could earn more than 150 Million pound just by entering the EPL...

We get just over 2 million all in for WINNING our league... I've got to say I don't know if reading a fan of a club playing in that league, with a billionaire(?) owner saying they can't to offer double the wages we can comical or insulting..:87:

Poor that you had you use a misunderstanding to have a pop. Oh well.

We always have the capability to spend though.

We used to overpay. People look at our net spend over the last 5 years as evidence for that, but we've only started our prudency this season.

But we have the draw of the PL. Would a player rather be a part of a dynamic young side in the PL or a SPL?

The way we are at the moment, you definitely can. Our top earners are relics from an older time.

Bulgarian hero on our coaching staff. His wedding was televised.

Depends what you count as slagging off. There's plenty of veiled 'oneupism' here.

    Well reasoned and sensible post.

Ah apologies for the misunderstanding. I meant that as a factor. If you're offered the chance to be part of a young, exciting team by 2 clubs then the draw of English will obviously be a factor. I'm not talking Celtic down; that was never my intention so I apologise if it came across that way. As fans, we will always think each other's clubs are a better option.

My overall point is that the package you'll get at either Villa or Celtic is extremely similar. He'll earn similar money, be part of a similar side but you're further ahead and can offer CL. However I think we have a higher ceiling.[/QUOTE]

I didn't misunderstand. Regardless of whether your comparison is correct or not I'm simply stating that you did make one. Which you did.

I genuinely have no idea what 'pop' you're taking about.

We could go on all day arguing about whether you overpay or not. It's purely subjective. I would say you overpay on the basis that your wage bill is far higher than ours but your squad is significantly weaker.

But we have the draw of the PL. Would a player rather be a part of a dynamic young side in the PL or a SPL?

Where is this idea that you have a 'dynamic' young side even coming from? You barely avoided relegation! This is hardly the Arsenal side of a few years ago.

This idea that we can match you in terms of wages is absolute madness. We get it on this forum all the time when fans of english clubs assume we have the financial clout of a mid-table BPL team. We're miles off that and far closer to championship level financially. If it came down to a straight up bidding war for a player we both equally wanted, you would be able to pay more every time.

Again I have no idea what you're talking about regarding 'veiled oneupism' :87:

As i've stated numerous times now, its a straight forward choice of BPL vs CL and money vs trophies. Our history and fanbase is unlikely to factor significantly, and neither is your self-proclaimed dynamic young team factor :smiley-laughing002:

In what way would you say villa had a higher ceiling?

And here is the patronising tone and ignorance yet again!

The table is the be all and end all! Right? It's not as if I watch every single Villa game so I maybe can talk with a bit more knowledge about our team.

We almost went down because of our 2012 form. Once we gelled, we were 7th in the form table. That gelled team is the young and dynamic team (that we've been praised for by fans of other clubs). The table doesn't tell the whole story and I'm not expecting you to follow every single team and have a knowledge of all of them. But to then talk down to me as if you know better. Really poor.

I'm gonna head back to our forum now. I'll be around trying to sort our charity match but I have nothing new to add to this Tonev debate.

Thanks to all who were friendly and unpatronising. I apologise if I ever put your club down.

    -Stefan

Stefan, you only see what you want to see. In my posts I also pointed out the limitations and frustrations that Celtic face due to having to ply their trade domestically in the SPL, and the difficulties there are in signing players, with the main selling point being a good chance of CL Group Stage football experience.

When I also pointed out the limitations of a club like Villa that can't compete with the top dogs for the league and CL positions in England, you only focused on what I said about that, but ignored my points about Celtic's limitations which are imposed on them due to the relatively poorly funded league they operate in most of the time.

The Champions League is a higher standard than the EPL, despite the fact that there are obviously less games involved. My view is that if a player like Tonev is ambitious to make the most of his career, then he'd choose to go to Celtic over a club like Villa, get CL experience, and if he's good enough he could move on to a top EPL or top German/Spanish club after that. That's Celtic's sales pitch to any ambitious player who wants to go to the very top of the game.

Sorry but the way Paul Lambert is being spoken about by a few of the members on here is nothing short of a disgrace. He was a terrific player and captain for us ffs, have a bit of respect.

On to Tonev, being honest I hadn't seen or heard of him until we were interested in him, he seems to be a good player with a lot of potential but I wouldn't lose sleep if we never signed him, if he signs for Villa so be it, it won't be the first time we lost out on a signing to an premiership side, we lost out on David James to Bristol City a few years ago Christ sake, Villa are a good club, good team and I wish Lambert all the best.

Aston Villa have agreed a £2.5million deal with Lech Poznan to sign Bulgarian winger Aleksandar Tonev.
The 23-year-old winger, who has played 11 times for his country, is expected to finalize the transfer this weekend. According to The Sun newspaper, sources close to Tonev say the lure of the Premier League swung the deal for Villa ahead of a host of top European clubs.

So basically the Sun say he's Villa's, and the Daily Record say he's ours.

...I don't think I believe either; this smacks of needless reprinting of the same kind of speculation that's been going about all week.

I watch the Ekstraklasa (Freeview 227 or on SportsTonightLive.com you can catch it) and I'd say he's one of Lech's best players and anyone that says he isn't obviously know they are losing a highly rated young player, not to mention Stiliyan is a real driver behind this deal.

And to add to the debate, we play in a * league so I wouldn't blame the lad. I'm a Celtic fan, not an SPL fan.

Another guy on here that watches the league said he's not the best winger in the league and that he is an average player. Not having watched a single second of the league myself, I suppose it is a matter of opinion.
