One was in the group stages and another was a Europa League campaign.

Think Lenny's first season has been the only season without Europe one way or another.

Not if you count the fact that we play in a European country :smiley-laughing002::smiley-laughing002::smiley-laughing002::smiley-laughing002::icon_mrgreen:

You did. Quote "The bolded bit, we are exactly the same (minus the Champions League)."

So the side that had you challenging for a CL place was "average". But the current side languishing near the relegation zone in what is arguably the weakest Premiership in years is full of potential and promise? That side was far better than your current team.

You have a billionaire owner but not billionaire style investment. Celtic are in the same boat here.

You absolutely do overpay. Just about every team in your league does. Look at what Celtic have achieved in that respect while spending significantly less.

You mention Villa are a decent young side but fail to mention that Celtic are actually a better young side. :50:

What don't you buy about the money thing? You seriously think we can compete with you guys in terms of wages? Not a chance. The second biggest club in our league has just been liquidated due to financial difficulties.

I have no idea what you mean regarding your coaching staff.

There's genuinely not much slagging going on here. You'll probably find Villa to be a pretty popular team here for a number of reasons.

You misunderstand me. I meant that we are the same as in a young side, getting better minus the Champions League. It was more a comment on the progress of our clubs and obviously you're further ahead because of the Champions League. Not that our clubs are the same, because we're obviously not.

    His post was
And my point was you could replace 'Celtic' with 'Villa' (minus the Champions League) and the point would remain the same.
Villa are in a good position (Quite rare one) just now. We have a very young squad who are playing good football in Champions League, so if the board did'nt spend to much on new players, and hold on to the current ones[/QUOTE]

Poor that you had you use a misunderstanding to have a pop. Oh well.

We always have the capability to spend though.

We used to overpay. People look at our net spend over the last 5 years as evidence for that, but we've only started our prudency this season.

But we have the draw of the PL. Would a player rather be a part of a dynamic young side in the PL or a SPL?

The way we are at the moment, you definitely can. Our top earners are relics from an older time.

Bulgarian hero on our coaching staff. His wedding was televised.

Depends what you count as slagging off. There's plenty of veiled 'oneupism' here.

    Well reasoned and sensible post.

Ah apologies for the misunderstanding. I meant that as a factor. If you're offered the chance to be part of a young, exciting team by 2 clubs then the draw of English will obviously be a factor. I'm not talking Celtic down; that was never my intention so I apologise if it came across that way. As fans, we will always think each other's clubs are a better option.

My overall point is that the package you'll get at either Villa or Celtic is extremely similar. He'll earn similar money, be part of a similar side but you're further ahead and can offer CL. However I think we have a higher ceiling.

Aston Villa have been guilty in the past few seasons especially of gross over-spending in the transfer market on, imo, sub standard players. The fault lies with both management teams and owners/chairperson.

It appears - even though it may be through necessity - that Lambert is stripping back the team and replacing it with hungry young players.

I definitely see a similarity with the TEAM and that of Celtic's - although we all know Celtic's team is by FAR better than theirs..............wouldn't mind that Benteke lad though :icon_mrgreen:

Lets face it - Villa is as good move, as is Celtic.

    Villa Pros:

    Good league
    More exposure
    Decent wages

    Celtic Pros:

    Champions league
    Huge fanbase
    Silverware

If I wasn't a Celtic fan it would be a close call.

Anyone slagging off Paul Lambert because he signed another player in front of us either is too young to remember or has a very short memory span.

    Hi Guys

I hope you don't mind me posting here -I'm a Villa fan from Ireland. I'd imagine it's been a tough choice for the lad, he's on record as saying he wants to play in the Champions' League, so Lambert has obviously had to be pretty persuasive to make him think twice. I don't think it would simply be an issue of Villa offering the player more money, as others have said, the English Premier League has quite a pull these days. There's a rumour going around that Villa are after another Bulgarian player, too, so perhaps having a compatriot alongside him is playing a part in Tonev's decision-making?

If you got offered a job at 7 quid an hour and another company offered you 14 quid an hour, where would you go and work? Only difference is there are rather a lot more zero's involved.

We just need to spot these players earlier.

If you think we'll be paying him twice what you offer than you're overestimating our finances.
