The pros for celtic is that he 'might' get the chance to play in the champions league ( we have to qualify first remember ) and he'll win silverware, the negatives is that the league itself is a joke, poor quality of opposition, playing in * awful half empty stadiums away from parkhead every other week, and the lack of competition at the top. As for villa he will be playing against much better teams week in week out in good stadiums, with the incentive of playing the likes of man utd, liverpool, chelsea etc, and ofcourse he'll probably get more dosh as far as wages go, the negatives are villa wont be competing for trophies (aside from domestic cups ) or european spots, chances are they'll be in midtable obscurity next season or trying to stay out of the relegation scrap, although he might still buy into what lambert is doing at villa ie trying to build a team of young quality players with the hope that they will develop and progress in the following years.

I know Villa have won stuff in the past, so have clubs like Nottingham Forest and Derby County and Preston etc. Celtic are a current CL outfit, clubs like Villa will never play at that level again - unless they find someone to bankroll them like the people that took over at Man City.

This is the main selling point Celtic have when trying to attract players to sign for the club, Celtic will use that selling point aggressively. If Tonev goes to Villa it will be for the glamour and money of the EPL - I don't blame him - that just the reality.

And the fact he might want to test himself against a better quality of opposition week in week out and see how far he can go. 8 or so games in the CL might not be enough for some players when comparing it to a season in the EPL. Thats if we qualify for the CL.

Would like to see him at CP, but I dont think Villa are that bad a choice either. (was it a bad move for petrov?) A good manager and a club trying to re build, that could be a very good opportunity for this guy to show case himself against a better calibre of team on a week in week out basis. Granted no CL football but thats not to say he wont get noticed and signed by a CL club in the coming years. If he is not gonna come to us and wants PL action then I would rather Villa than the likes of newcastle etc. But as I said at the start Hopefully he is in the hoops next season ;) hail hail!!

Exactly, nobody knew about him before he was linked with us... now it is a disaster if we let him go to another club. Who cares.

Ah but don't you know, Celtic are now a 'top European club' after, what could be, a one-off this year.

We've been in the last 16 three times in six years. That's not a one off, that's pretty established. Not guarenteed yet but established.

You're more a CL club than the likes of Man City. Who are just *. Which considering the difference in budget is a massive achievement.

For the record, I wouldn't begrudge this guy if he went to you. The reason I waded into this thread was to debate with the people who were slagging Villa off. I like Celtic. We share club legends which in a modern game dictated by money, is a rarity.

Aye but the 3 other campaigns did much to damage that.

...and where's your 'reason and sense'? From the way you're talking, anyone would think Villa were the only team in for Tonev who have a 'vision for the future'. You'd think Paul Lambert telling Tonev about his vision for Villa would be more influential than Neil Lennon talking to him about his similar one for Celtic - as though our club ceased to be a credible option as soon as Lambert sat down with him.

We too are a mainly young side, with a promising manager that doesn't tend to spend a lot of money - we just play in a different context (smaller league, but with access to Europe). The decision Tonev has to make is between playing a guaranteed 2 games vs the likes of Man U, or a v good chance of playing against many of Europe's top teams, and also in a small but nonetheless decent league which is a good shop window.

Personally, I honestly believe he'd make better progress here, but that Villa would probably be a good move too.
