And though Petta wasn't on the bench in Seville because of his form, he had two fantastic seasons with us and is the type of left winger we could sorely do with right now.

The only player from this current squad that would have improved MON team would have been Foster. O'Neills team had genuine world class players, does Lennon's team?

I think that MON at the time would have pounced immediately at the chance to sign Wanyama, Fraser Forster, and Kris Commons.

You could put forward an argument that the current squad is deeper than Martin O'Neill's squad was. Outside of the best 14-15 players there were some pretty ordinary players in O'Neill's squad.

As far as the first team goes, no way is this team better than Martin O'Neill's team from 2000-2004. The present team has a better goalkeeper but in defence and attack the edge very clearly goes to O'Neill's team. If the two teams could ever play each other then the most interesting area to watch would be the midfield battle. It would be fun to watch these two central midfield line-ups going head to head................

    Wanyama

    Kayal-----------Ledley

    Lambert----------Petrov

    Lennon

As good as the current line-up is I would again give the edge to O'Neill's team in that area.

O'Neill's team would beat the present team in my mind. No question.

the term world class gets recklessly used nowadays but we genuinely had one of the best strikers in the world in our team under oneill which gives them a massive advantage ,
    larsson
    sutton
    hartson
    thompson
    petrov
    lambert
    lennon
    agathe
    moravick
    balde
    mjallby
    valgaren
    vega
    varga
and juninho would all walk into our team right now

Picking a starting 11 would be a nightmare. It would be a good problem to have, though. I wouldnt think the board would like paying all of those wages though.

Vega, Varga, Juninho would not get in our team just now.

Agathe would have some serious competition.

I think Wanyama on his day and to a certain extent Scott Brown are better players than Lennon was - discuss.

I suppose the current team might win if Neil Lennon deliberately scored a couple of OG's so that his team won. :smiley-laughing002:

But then Henrik would get mad and score a hat-trick. So......nah......O'Neill's team still wins.

Funny you never mentioned Ledley because I think Lenny was as important yet inconspicuous as Joe is.

You don't realise how important these players are until they aren't there.

Not for me. I would choose Neily out of those 3. Neily was so under-rated by so many. I bet if you asked Martin O'Neill who the most important player in his Celtic teams was, apart from Henrik, he would tell you it was Neil Lennon.

Yep Joe Ledley is a class act but in a very quiet way , when Izzy won poty he should have halved it with joe cause he covered his * all season
