I think his sketchy crossing is the reason he's under rated here.

If his crossing were more consistent he'd be the perfect modern day full back.

It's a massive part of his game though. He spends most of the game in the opposition half and whips in at least half a dozen crosses every match.

I don't think he's a particularly good defender either, though.

He is far better at defending when he's asked to defend. Proven midweek.

I think it would be a case of the grass being greener for some when Emilio's time at Celtic is over. His link up from the left wing position is good and he gets himself into such positions that he occupies the opposition full back and on many occasions their winger or centre half as well.

He's actually a pretty good defender one-on-one but the way he is asked to play as our main attacking outlet on the left makes it very hard for him to be a positionally responsible defender.

His crossing is incredibly frustrating and hard to imagine that, at 29, he is going to become more consistent in that regard.

I remember not so long ago we were all raving about him and how great it was to finally have the left back position sorted out. I think he's looked like a bit of a bombscare since Ledley left. Ledley would always cover for him when needed. I don't really think anyone does anymore and we expect him to support every attack and never get caught at the back. If he's caught up the pitch someone should be covering for him. Yes he makes the odd daft decision but at his best he's quality and seems to love the club.

Still a valuable player in our side and towards the way we want to play. Is beginning to deal a lot better when teams go the aerial route, like Partick tried with Stevenson today.

As for his crossing, it reminds me of Agathe. Bolting down the wing at 100mph and trying to cross the ball at the same time.

A few of his crosses were abysmal today.

But sharpest i''ve seen him in a long time... first to every ball! :50:

He's never been the same after his first season when he picked up that injury, broken leg am sure can't mind right now:smiley-laughing002:

But his first season he was phenomenal. Same as Kayal in his first season before he got that injury.

Although Izzys still been a superb signing for us overall even if he didn't reach those first season heights again.

The guys the best left back we have and can hope for for a while I rekon. Yes his crosses more often then not end up behind the goal but he's there... providing them. In a couple of matches last year with him and stokes he looked great with support (as mentioned a few posts back with joe ledley).
He needs the support of someone like Armstrong to link up and cover to show his full potential.
Left back has always been a dodgy area for us. If he sticks to it he looks good but asking him to attack on his own won't win him much plaudits.

*edit I know Charlie is known to be thrown in there w but I'd go with Emilio everytime given that he has the support

RONNY DEILA has praised the resurgence of Emilio Izaguirre and revealed the Honduran had to be told some harsh home truths when his form deserted him.

Celtic's 29-year-old left-back was superb in Baku against Qarabag last week and his performance against Partick Thistle at the weekend was close to the level which saw him win Player of the Year in his first season in Scotland.

Deila dropped Izaguirre in Iceland for the match against FC Stjarnan but since then the player has rediscovered his form and will start against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park tonight.

The Celtic boss revealed: "I have been talking to Emilio all the time. He has been picking up a lot of things and has been better.

"We need everyone to be sharp into the games, which he has been, and I have been pleased with him.

"He was great against Qarabag last week, especially defensively, and that has been his biggest issue.

"That and also his crossing he has been working on. Emilio is doing well right now."

I'm sure Deila dropping him was enough truth to show him he needs to up his game and isn't guaranteed a place in the starting XI....as should and tbh I think is the case with every player. Deila knows this and if the players don't react professional enough and try harder when their form drops they probably shouldn't be here.

You have to love Izzy though, plays with his heart which is something hard to come by these days.

Liability. Surely we're looking at a lb that can defend and cross a ball.
