The man that made the video is a Coptic Christian now living in the U.S,a sect that is treated like dirt in Eygpt

According to the Telegraph, "Bacile identifies himself as an Israeli Jew and said he produced, directed and wrote the two-hour film, Innocence of Muslims."

"Speaking by telephone to the Associated Press from an undisclosed location, Bacile, who went into hiding on Tuesday, remained defiant, saying Islam is a 'cancer' and that he intended his film to be a provocative political statement condemning the religion."

Sounds to me like a bitter individual trying to cause trouble. And, sadly, succeeding.

Why should he have to worry about whether people would be fine with it or not? The blame here lies with those who are prepared to engage in violence or commit murder, not some guy making a film.

Isn't it time the Muslim world learned that we're not all constricted by the tenets of their faith and that the artistic interpretation of a historical character is acceptable in a democratic society?

After all, if a group of Neo-Nazis suddenly decided that any unfavourable depiction of Hitler would incur a violent backlash, do we all just have to acquiesce their demands? Where do you draw the line? Who decides which characters can be the subject of artistic scrutiny and which can't?

This is not a case of someone writing something for sake of truth, and failing to account for the extreme reactions of others. He has said "he intended his film to be a provocative political statement condemning the religion."

This was a deliberate attempt to provoke, that was its aim - it was successful, and now innocent people are dead because of it.

This scummer has just lobbed an idealogical grenade into a highly-charged part of the world that he doesn't even have the courage to live in himself, and then scuttled for cover, while others are killed...

I, like the vast majority of the world ,haven't seen this movie... But look what happens in the islamic world!! ... These people are insane, brainwashed by a 'religion' that is nothing more than a facist sect.

As a Christian, ...there is nothing anyone could say about Jesus that could bring me to murder, never mind 4americans, who are completely unconnected to the movie.

    Not according to the Guardian

And do people on here have no respect for freedom of speech?Murdering people for not liking what they have to say is the crime here and people that cow before religious sensibilities and threats of violence are complicit in that crime

    Very interesting link. :50:

Like yourself, I have respect for people's freedom of speech; and (unlike yourself?) I also have respect for people's religion.

But freedom of speech is a right which goes hand in hand with responsibilities.

If some Mullah now stood up in public and incited people to murder the filmmaker, would you be standing up for his right to free speech? Or does that street only run one way?

Again, that just doesn't cut it - so what if it's a provocative political statement? Surely it only becomes provocative because Muslims react violently to this sort of thing? A withering critique, however provocative, of other ideologies wouldn't attract the same level of condemnation so why the special treatment for Islam?

The guy hasn't killed anyone, he made a film. The cowards are those that attack indiscriminately.

If, for instance, I stated an opinion and threatened to kill anyone who offered a different version, would I be in the wrong or would it be the person who disagreed with me?

I've not seen the film so I can't say exactly how Muhammed has been portrayed, but from my reading of the Hadiths (contemporary texts written by his followers to support the Koran) the guy strikes me as a fairly contemptible individual.

Am I allowed to come to that conclusion on my own or do I have to have it approved by the local mosque?

That's what strikes me about it, it is so bad.

I have to say, if someone made a film like that attempting to mock my religion, I'd just laugh at it. It would please me that they'd shown themselves up as total idiots.

Incitement isn't covered by freedom of speech.

If the mullah says that the bloke is a scumbag, that's freedom of speech.

If he encourages his followers to kill the guy, that's incitement.

As I understand it, the film makes no such demands of the viewer.

It's not a withering critique, it's a piece of absolute crap. The actors were told they were making a film about something else - then all the Mohammed and Islam stuff was dubbed over later. In other words it was a piece of misleading, mendacious bigotry right from the outset. I think you need to actually watch the thing you are defending here.

That's rubbish. The killers here were not engaging in cowardly premeditated attack - they were a * enraged mob. That's not cowrdice. Cowardice is whipping up that mob with your words - or your film - and then running away.

You seem to be confusing the right to hold your own opinion with the right to incite violence. They are quite distinct.

Well not having watched the film, it's fairly safe to say you don't understand it that well?

Personally I abhor violence - but I have more respect for someone with the guts to incite people directly and honestly, than inciting them with propaganda - like the Nazis incited hatred of Jews.

This piece of trash is not any kind of critique - it is naked provocation to violence - and it has achieved its goal.

    1. So what if it's crap? Is making a crap movie against the law? Can you tell me which bits were actually misleading? As for dubbing, well I'm sure you can work that one out.

    2. Seriously? Are you saying that as long a mob is enraged, its actions can be excused? How on earth can you justify murder by saying "well they were enraged, so that makes it okay"? Cowardice is murdering innocent people because you know no other way to react.

    3. Missing the point. My opinion of Muhammed is likely to be just as offensive to Muslims as this guy's film. Does that mean I have to come to a different conclusion for fear of how others will react? Granted, I've no desire to shout this from the rooftops but if asked I can only answer honestly. And as you've said I haven't seen the film, but it would only be incitement if the film directly called for people to commit violent acts or murder. Being provocative is completely different.

Your acting like an utter * Hand. Defending Muslim mobs who murdered innocent people. You're exactly like the people who were saying Neil Lennon brought the bombs, bullets and bigotry on himself. A disgrace to our club.

We certainly do. I don't understand the islamic people at all, just seem to be a very volatile breed.
