    I think people also misjudge the size of Benfica, they have massive worldwide appeal. I really like them as a club, however as far as judging what the two teams have been like historically it's just stupid. In the here and now, they have better players than us. However that doesn't mean that they are a better team.

    Add in the fact they have just lost there two most influential midfielders in Javi Garcia and Axel Witsel then we do have a good chance to beat them; especially because one of there other infuential players in Gaitan has been off form and been a bench player this season (according to our Portuguese Benfica fan on here :50:)

    Benfica are a fantastic, proper club. They aren't unbeatable though and I'm really looking forward to playing against them again, I want to see Charlie Mulgrew going toe-to-toe with a player in the class of Cardozo to see how he progresses, I want to see Gary Hooper in and about Luisao causing problems.

    I can't wait for this and that's before we even get to the challenge of Messi, Iniesta, Xavi and co. A team widely regarded as the best ever seen. This is Celtic, back in the big time. Enjoy it.

    Benfica has 2 European Cups, and 5times runner-up. At the moment i can see us more even than a few weaks ago and i can only make predictions at half-time of our game..... :) Lets see how our team reacts to the loss of Garcia and Witsel, they were two of our piers, so im looking forward to see us play without them!

    We are very unlucky not to have two European Cups - we should have won the Final in 1970.

We have a bigger support and we’ve also traditionally had better players. For example; Johnstone, Dalglish and Larsson were all better than Eusbeio.

    However, that aside, history is irrelevant. We are only concerned with the abilities of their contemporary squad. I don’t know if it is better or worse than the Benfica sides we knocked out in 2006/2007 and 2007/2008, but we certainly have no reason to fear them either way.

    In terms of stature, SLB are MASSIVE. One of the only teams in the world bigger than us in history and size.

    We, on the other hand, should have won in 1970.

    But as I said, it’s irrelevant to the present.

    I don’t fear this Benfica side.

    The only team in the group who I fear is Barca. Not because Barca are simply the 'top side' – because many tops sides have come to Parkhead before and been comfortably beaten – but because this Barca side are probably the greatest club side of the past 25 years, perhaps of all time. They are an exceptional class.

    We should always be looking to beat teams like Benfica and Moscow, though.

We are one of the biggest clubs in the world. Only United, Real and Barca are bigger. And even then, it’s marginal.

    It is a great club.

    But we are bigger. And our achievements are actually more wonderful when you consider the circumstances under which they were realised.

    Benfica is a big club, but is also a very rich club.

    We were founded in the poorest area of Glasgow. We’ve had to put up with a tremendous amount of adversity, cheating, bigotry and corruption. I'm sure you know the story. In many ways, our progress and potential has been inhibited by these factors.

    I agree with this, not to take anything away from Benfica who are a magnificent club and probably the better team at the moment. And winning the European Cup and being runners-up in two European finals makes us one of Europe's elite sides, that can never change.

    Eusebio, along with Jinky, is one of the greatest players of all time, I doubt anyone would dispute that.

    I actually think Benfica arent looking too good now.

    They have good skilled footballers but they aren't that solid looking now they have lost Garcia and Witsel.

    Spartak probably look better than them now.

    I'm quite looking forward to these games. If our new players gel quickly, I feel we'll have a genuine chance of staying in Europe after Christmas. Either way, I'll be doing my best to be there. :celt_2:
