I'd love to know how this guy gets as positive a press. The facts dont tend to back up that he has done that well there. He has had them in relegation trouble every year he's been there. He seems a likeable guy but I'm not sure why he is thought so highly of. Paul Jewell did a better job at Wigan than he did.

He had a really tough job though, Wigan always lost their best players so were in a constant state of rebuilding Scharner, Cattermole, Diame, Moses, Valencia, N'Zogbia, Rodallega and he done it well and had them playing great football.

Dont forget he also set up and laid the foundations of Swanseas too before going to Wigan.

Paul Jewell really bought his way up the Leagues and had money to spend to keep them in the Premiership but he done it buying mostly old and experienced players. Martinez job was totally different, he changed the whole style of play of the Club, he got rid of all the old guard, brought in young players and has left them in a great situation, even though they got relegated they have a really valuable team, good young players and the football they play will set them up nicely for a quick return.

He's only been a manager for 6 years, yet he's built up a good reuputation for bargain signings...

    Al Habsi £4million (Wigan)
    Rangel Free (Swansea)
    A. Williams £400k (Swansea)
    Alcaraz £1million (Wigan)
    Diame £3.3million (Wigan)
    McCarthy £2million (Wigan)
    N. Dyer £400k (Swansea)
    Moses £2.5million (Wigan)
    Maloney £1million (Wigan)
    Kone £3million (Wigan)

Now you could probably put price tags of about £6million on Williams, £2million Rangel, £6million Diame, £15million McCarthy, £4million Dyer, £14million Moses, £4million Maloney, £4million Kone.

He also signed Jason Scotland for free for Swansea who scored 53 goals in 2 seasons.

    Watching SSN just now.

£20m first year parachute payment for being relegated, what a * joke.

Also PSG interested in Laudrup but he has stated he wants to stay on the conditions funds are made available.

You can argue if you like that Martinez changed the style etc, but as proven by Wenger in particular, its not a particularly successful way of playing in the EPL. Whelan has backed his managers but kept the club operating within its means.

Both Jewell and Martinez's remit was to keep them in the EPL and Jewell did so more successfully. He also took them to a cup final iirc. Under Martinez, they have went backwards. They might be prettier to watch but that means nothing in terms of success in league terms.

Club issue statement regarding Roberto Martinez

Wigan Athletic can confirm that following an approach made by another football club, permission has been given to Roberto Martinez to discuss a vacant managerial position.

After discussions between Roberto and Chairman Dave Whelan, it was reluctantly agreed that Roberto, who remains the Manager of Wigan Athletic, would be allowed to speak another club.

There is no further comment to be made at this point.

Any truth in Kolo Toure agreeing a deal with Liverpool for next season??

    Weird one for me.

    Good signing that.

Toure is a very good defender - not given enough opportunities at *.

4 years actually. But you are absolute spot on. Cannot believe people can't see the qualities of Roberto Martinez, especially considering he actually won the FA Cup for Wigan.

Which is a lot more than Moyes has achieved in his 11 years at Everton, despite being at a much bigger club and who, despite their own financial difficulties, have spent a lot more than Martinez could have ever dreamed of spending at Swansea or Wigan.

Also if you look at Evertons ability to produce youth Martinez would certainly benefit from that too.
