Danny Welbeck will sign a five-year contract worth £75,000 a week at Manchester United.

The England striker, out of Wednesday’s clash with Italy through injury, will end protracted talks about his new deal.

Welbeck, 21, had been reluctant to sign another long-term contract until his salary reflected his growing status as Wayne Rooney’s regular strike partner at United.

He made 30 appearances in the Barclays Premier League last season after forcing his way ahead of his rival forwards at Old Trafford— Dimitar Berbatov, Javier Hernandez and the departed Michael Owen.

He scored nine league goals for United before he was taken to Euro 2012 by new England chief Roy Hodgson. This season, Ferguson has set a minimum target of 20 goals for Welbeck, who now has nine England caps.

His new contract, to be signed imminently, is packed with incentives based on future performance.

    £75k a week for Welbeck :52: Rooney should demand £500k a week.

What has football come to :54:. £75k a week for him? They guy is a good player, but he isn't worth anything even close to that. 9 league goals is a very poor return for a Man Utd striker, one that starts most games. Does he seriously think he can hold Man Utd to ransom? He is deluded if he thinks he can do any better

If he was to be let go by them he'd struggle to even get £40k a week at a team like Sunderland or Aston Villa.

Hes an average player no matter who he plays for. Once upon a time Craig Beattie done half decent for us, but we knew he wasn't good enough to be offered £20k a week on a 5 year contract.

He was on loan at Sunderland who attempted to buy him permanently when he was 20 years old so there goes your first point

He's not an average player, he started before Berbatov, Hernandez and even Rooney at Anfield last season, big responsibility for such an average player. He's only 21 and will continue to improve. He's clearly rated highly at United and I can see why, he had a good Euros and will do well this season providing he plays as much as last year

To use Craig Beattie as a comparison is fairly insulting, Welbeck won't be playing for St Johnstone when he's 28

OK my prediction for the epl

City to retain their championship, i think United will have another decent season (thats Newcastle btw):84: Liverpool will struggle to end in 5th or 6th. The London Clubs are not that good, Arsenal have won nothing in about 8 years (are they a big club or just big in england) Tottenham might do well and end in the top 5. london huns or chelskie will be boring as ever, they should never of won the european cup imo its now devalued and becoming a bit of a joke comp when teams like that get anywhere near the final never mind getting jammy and fluking the win. But they will prob end up in the top 4. Everton may get in and push the likes of Liverpool further down the epl and manchester will be 2nd or even 3rd:84: Cant wait:87:

It's a friendly! 25,000 on a Sunday afternoon was quite good I thought.

Yeah a friendly. More sentimental reasons than anything with Hyypia (<3)

Think we're lining up quite well, playing well in our friendlies. (Liverpool that is). A winger in and a striker and we're set.

Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique;Allen, Gerrard, Lucas; Borini, Suarez, (New player, Dempsey?)

He compared him to Beattie in a scaled-down equivalent of 20k a week though. The equivalent of playing for St. Johnstone for Welbeck would be a Sunderland or Stoke, who I can see him playing for at 28.

He only gets a game though because Hernandez doesnt have the quality and Berbatov doesnt link well enough with Rooney.

He is Man U 3rd/4th choice back-up class and theyve lost it and offered him a long contract on massive wages. He's the type of player like a Darren O'Dea or Paddy McCourt who should be happy to accept decent wages and know they are back-up.

Man U for me are a team who should have a good chance of winning the European Cup any given season. With guys like Welbeck thats not a reality. Imagine Welbeck playing for Barca, Madrid, Milan, Juventus, Bayern, Chelsea, City :56: no danger

I'm clearly not going to get through to you so I'll leave you with reactions on a United forum (people that watch him every week) to the news

    Best signing of the season

He's earned it, good on him.

Hopefully this is true and there's one for Nani to follow

    Brilliant news.

    Valencia Kagawa Scholes Nani
    Rooney
    Van Persie

It's hard to say how Fergie will fit everyone in, looking on a United forum, there have been about 20 different formations suggested with Rooney, RVP, Welbeck, Hernandez, Nani, Valencia, Young, Kagawa, Carrick, Anderson, Cleverly, Scholes in midfield and attack

"Another new face is expected to arrive at Manchester City before the season starts".

Carlos Tevez and Joleon Lescott are fighting over it.

RVP and Rooney, the player of the year and the runner-up, 71 goals between them last season.

Add that to a fit Vidic and the added bonus of the magical Kagawa .

    Very tasty :50:

Arsenal will be a better team without Van Persie. They rely on him too much. A front three of Cazorla - Giroud - Podolski is pretty good on paper, hopefully they can work well together. The stupid * should be getting Alex Song signed up to a new deal though
