Injuries haunted me.. docs told me to move HOUSE

    Pre-season with Celtic was shock
Scotland’s Young Player of the Year’s fitness woes had Hoops medics bemused.

But telling him to move from his Prestwick home to Glasgow worked a treat.

Forrest — who picked up his PFA Young Player of the Year award on Sunday — admitted: “I’ve moved into a flat. The gaffer told me I had to move to Glasgow to be closer to training.

“The physios thought all the driving to and from Prestwick was causing injuries, because I was sitting in the same position for so long after training. They felt it would affect the back of my hamstrings.

“It didn’t bother me, but they weren’t happy with that. A few physios have said it and a few of the boys have said similar things to me — that all the driving can take its toll.

“It was an hour and 20 minutes each way, from training at Lennoxtown to Prestwick, so it was a long time.

“I moved to Glasgow earlier this season and I feel fresher now. It’s been a good move in a lot of ways.

“I’ve had to learn to look after myself and I think I’ve grown up a wee bit because of that.

“I still can’t cook and there’s a tendency to eat takeaways all the time, but I’m trying not to.

“We’ve a dietician at the club and she’s not happy with my diet, so I’m trying to change that.

“My parents come up for games, so they come back to my flat and make sure I’m living the right way and the cupboards are full of the right foods.

“I still live quite a quiet life though. I haven’t changed any just because I’ve got a flat. I’m still a young boy and I like to think I’m still down to earth.

“Things haven’t really changed any for me, but I do feel more of a first-team player.

“Obviously if you’re doing well people recognise you a bit more, but my priority is to keep living quietly and keep doing well.” Forrest was chuffed to win what’s likely to be the first of three gongs in a week — he’s favourite to take the Clydesdale Bank SPL Young Player award at a dinner in Glasgow tomorrow night and will collect the SFWA award next Sunday.

He said: “The Players’ award is a really good one to win. It shows that guys in the same league are watching you and think you’re doing well.

“Last season I was part of the first-team, but I didn’t really feel as though I was one of them. This season it’s been a bit easier to handle and I feel more part of it.

“The lads have really helped me with that and I feel more a part of the group.

“When you’re a young player it can be hard to come into an established group. The season before, I was in the reserve changing room for most of the season, but when you get in with the first-team you see they’re all down to earth.

“When you realise that it helps when you go out on the park with these guys.”

Forrest’s season has been hampered by injury — he hasn’t played since the League Cup Final defeat to Kilmarnock on March 18 — but he says he’s looking forward to coming back in top condition.

He said: “There’s been no reaction to the injury at all. It’s been frustrating, but once I’m back running it will be fine and I’ll be okay for pre-season.

“I haven’t given any thought to the Olympics because if Celtic have Champions League qualifiers I’ll be staying here to play for Celtic. I think that’s the case.”

Forrest reiterated his desire to stay at Parkhead, despite being watched by clubs like Spurs.

He said: “It is good that teams are watching me. It means I’m doing well, but I’m happy at Celtic and I want to get Celtic into the Champions League.

“I don’t think anybody will want to leave.

“We know there are a couple of qualifiers and then we could be in the Champions League, so we are going to give it our all.

“It’s a young team and the experience we got from the Europa League this season will definitely help us.

“It was my first European campaign and I managed to play in every game and that’s what you want to do — play in big games and test yourself.

“I think we gave a good account of ourselves.

“It’s a different type of game, but I think we could easily have gone through in our group.

“But it wasn’t to be and, hopefully, it gives us experience for next season.”

Common thing amongst sports people, if you are doing exercise for hours and hours a day jumping into a car and sitting down for an hour in the 1 position after it isn't good for your muscles.

    This.

Also, I'm surprised that he only STARTS to take care about his diet. "there’s a tendency to eat takeaways all the time, but I’m trying not to." - professionals:87:? Don't they teach our youths how to look after themselves and how important it is for professional sportsmen?

    Makes sense.

His diet can't be too bad either, he's not carrying much extra weight anyway.

He seems so down to earth as well, likes he said himself. Hopefully he's here for years to come.

Giggs had a similar problem years ago I remember. He kept picking up hamstring injuries and they didn't know why until they realised it was his driving position, sorted it and look how he's doing now! Just goes to show I guess that the most ordinary things can cause problems.

This. He's 20, he's probably lived with his mum and dad his whole life, he isn't going to be able to cook anything extravagant - do you expect him to have soup or beans and toast for every meal?

Well, my thought was far beyond just eating takeaways. It is about general professional attitude and I believe that proper diet is an important part of it.

I expect him to eat healthy food and most of all I expect him to eat proper amounts and proportions of carbohydrates, proteins and fat (not to mention minerals and vitamins) for a professional football player which is way different to the proper diet of an average person (like more carbo for example).

Also, to be more precise, I would like to expect him to eat porper proportions of different kinds of carbohydrates, proteins and fat that suits his professional footballer's lifestyle (intensive training included) and his individual metabolism. But fulfilling my expectation only from 2nd paragraph would still be good for him.

Proper diet and lifestyle is important to nutrise muscles and all his body, which makes footballer not only develope more efficiently but also helps him remain on a high level longer. I just wish him all the best like I wish him to keep on developing to as high level as his natural potential allows and to remain on a high level for as long as Giggs for example.

As long as his takeaways aren't deep fried. You can get Italians to deliver and some chinese grub (chicken & mushroom or curry with bolied rice) is ok...

As for his car - he drives an Audi A3, so the seating position might play a part. Maybe he would be better off in a different type of car, with a more elevated seat position. (and no I'm not a stalker, he pulled up alongside me at the lights one night)

Although it is right to say that sitting down for that length of time after training is not a good idea - your muscles start to contract and there's a build up of lactic acid, which is not good - so you need to keep on the move.

You would think we would experts at CP telling ALL the players this sort of thing...

(hoping there's not an issue, as wasn't there a story about Maloney's fitness when he landed at Wigan???)
