Going by FIFA Guidetti would get the assist unless he scored the penalty himself. As would Virgil.

So if a guy goes into a tackle and the ball squirts out to a team mate, who scores, is that an assist? Wouldn't have scored if he hadn't tackled the guy.

If the keeper never put it straight to Johansen the goal wouldn't have happened, the keeper assisted the goal:50:

What if you're taking a man on, th defenders stabs the ball into the path of a striker who puts it away? Goal wouldn't have happened without taking the man on but I wouldn't say it was an assist.

All very dependent on the tackle. If it was a coming together and the ball just squirms out then yes. If the defenders makes a clean slide tackle or standing tackle then I'd say no.

An assist is hard to define at times, and really is an overrated statistic.

To clear it up I don't include penaltys/freekicks won, or keeper saves that are tapped in and only if a pass/cross comes off an opponent but was meant/going in the direction of the person who scored - so not if for example Izaguirre cosses and it deflects off a defender goes the opposite way and Stokes knocks it in, only if Izzy cuts it back and it scrapes off a defender on the way to the player.

I think some stats websites keep stats very badly, like transfermarkt. If you look through for example Ronaldo's assists this season on their website he has about 6 assists for winning and scoring his own penalties - assists to himself :56: same with Guidetti he has 3 assists for winning and scoring penalties for us. I could see the point of including a penalty won if someone else took it but even then I dont think thats really an assist as the person doing the fouling is the one whos conceded a penalty. Penalties won should really be included on their own as a stat.

Disagree with the Penalty bit, think its good to count it as a assist.

I'd agree that an assist can be an overrated statistic.

A player having 10 assists, going by what they class as an assist could really be * all.

Aye, like Guidetti, some sources will say he has 9 assists but 3 are penalties he won and scored himself and he got 2 assists against St Mirren I think it was where the ball only hit off him and fell to players who scored.

Its better to know chances created, which are balls that went to someone with a shooting chance but nobody publishes or possibly even counts them for the SPL.

To be honest ILTC I'm surprised you're no counting them.

    You're slacking!

Should be in a column of its own, penalties won.

Or the Chris Sutton tactic of waiting for a tackle and throwing yourself infront of it while elbowing them in the chest :56:

Great to see Stefan scoring goals. His game has come on big time. I would like to see him take on more from distance, we have seen him do it before too. If he can add this as a regular dimension to his game, then he will become our best player
