Getting the thumbs up from Peter Shilton in the Record today............

    http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/peter-shilton-celtic-keeper-fraser-1398295

ENGLAND legend Peter Shilton admits he was blown away by Celtic keeper Fraser Forster’s heroics in the Nou Camp.

And after watching the young keeper produce the goods in Barcelona, the 63-year-old is now convinced Forster is ready to challenge Manchester City’s Joe Hart for the England No.1 shirt.

Forster took his time to settle at Celtic after arriving on loan from Newcastle in August 2010.

His ability with the ball at his feet was called into question by some fans and others felt the 6ft 7in keeper didn’t have the mobility required for the top level.

But Forster has proved the doubters wrong and many believe the turning point came last December at Parkhead when he saved a last-minute spot-kick from Hearts’ Eggert Jonsson to earn Celtic a crucial 1-0 win.

The 24-year-old has not looked back since and after sealing a permanent move to Celtic in the summer his soaring form and confidence also saw him earn a call-up to the England squad earlier this month.

But it was his stunning display against the superstars of Barcelona on Tuesday night that has finally seen him make his mark down south.

Shilton, who won 125 caps between the sticks for his country, said: “I saw the highlights of the Barcelona game and Fraser Forster was terrific.

“He had two outstanding saves from Lionel Messi.

“The stop from close range was breathtaking.

“It was just instinct that made him put his hands there but that’s exactly what great goalkeepers do – they prevent the ball from going into the net by any means possible.

“The reflex save from the header was fantastic too.

“If you can perform in the Nou Camp against the best players in the world in the Champions League in a big game like that then you can play on any stage and in any arena and that includes international football.

“The Barcelona match was high profile and Forster has done his reputation no harm at all with that display.

“Forster must be playing well for Celtic to get international recognition from England in the first place.

“But that performance in the Nou Camp will have shown the England camp Forster can handle pressure situations and big matches.”

Shilton is delighted Foster now offers genuine competition to established England No.1 Hart.

Roy Hodgson had previously called up John Ruddy and Jack Butland as back-ups but neither player is a realistic contender for the No.1 shirt at present.

However, Shilton reckons Forster can now push Hart all the way and insists it is crucial the Manchester City ace faces stiff competition to stop him resting on his laurels.

Shilton knows from personal experience the importance of having to fight for your place, having been denied dozens of caps due to the form of former Liverpool star Ray Clemence and Manchester City’s Joe Corrigan. He said: “It is encouraging to see Forster put pressure on Hart for the England No.1 spot.

“People told Hart he would be the England keeper for years to come and I don’t like that.

“That is why I am delighted to see Forster exert some pressure on Hart as that will keep him on his toes.

“When I played for England I had Clemence and Corrigan pressurising me so you always had to be at the top of your game because there was someone else who could easily come in and take your place and perform at the highest level.”

But Shilton reckons Forster’s rise to prominence in England will prove detrimental to Celtic in the long run as Premiership clubs will soon start trying to lure the keeper home.

He said: “England are aware of Forster and if he continues to play like he did in the Nou Camp then it will only be a matter of time before he ends up playing in the Premier League.

“I mean no disrespect to Scottish football but the Premier League is the biggest stage and highest profile league of all.

“Forster is young and no doubt ambitious and if he continues to be consistent for Celtic then a big move will probably happen sooner rather than later.”

Usual English arrogance, why would we have him on loan for two years then when we finally signed him let him go just because you lot have an inflated opinion of your own league?

True unfortunately, like Given, he will go, and we will lose a player that could possibly have had ten years in the #1 jersey for us (as Given certainly would have had).

Money will talk here I feel and big Fraser will go.

If we get 2 more seasons out of him I will be happy, and we will be lucky.

Arrogance of their league is irrelevant, we will get an offer we cant refuse, its the nature of the game.

I just hope if he does leave, he leaves to play and not to play bench warmer for some billionaire's plaything. England call up will force the move.

Why? If anything it bought us more time as now he realises he can be part of the England setup, while still at Celtic, so I think he'll be in less of a rush to leave. Of course the demand for him might be higher, but so is his price.

Thats what I'm saying, Fraser having already gotten the England call up will mean English clubs will be willing to now offer the kind of money we wont/cant refuse!

Plus as soon as he gets word that teams in his natural homeland are interested in him, his mind will start to think of things other than Celtic.

    Same with Hooper imo.

And justifiably so my friend :50:

The figure I'm thinking of just now is around about the £8m+ region.

If he gets a cap for England? £12m.

He's better than David De Gea anyway.

There's absolutely NO reason why we shouldn't be playing hardball IF any offers come in.

If he gets a cap for England (especially in a competitive game), then we have the ball in our court. If he keeps up his performances on the European front and domestic level - we are well within our rights to ask for that figure of about £12m for a 24-y/o ENGLISH keepers with a bright, bright future.

Better than Ruddy, better than Buttland, better than Robert Green, Ben Foster etc. :bbpd:

Exactly, comfortably the 2nd best English keeper.

I was pleased to hear the fans chanting his name just after the game started yesterday. First time I've heard a Forster chant in his time here :50:
