The Portuguese press have been talking all week about the likelihood of Benfica's Andre Gomes moving before the transfer window closes. It's what Benfica want and they've got agent Jorge Mendes on the case, the most likely destination was thought to be Liverpool.

O Jogo explained on Tuesday morning that Liverpool were trying to push the deal to a last minute one, making Benfica nervous and therefore keener to come down from their €15m valuation. That seemed like a good idea until Monaco became involved.

A Bola today say that the French principality club have moved into the race to sign Gomes and could beat Liverpool. Monaco may be prepared to pay more than the Merseyside club and that creates problems.

Mendes has close links with Monaco and has helped them buy some of their current star players. His Gestifute agency took Radamel Falcao and Ricardo Carvalho to the club and he also had dealings in other recent transfers to Monaco, such as the purchase of Geoffrey Kondogbia from Sevilla.

It's natural Mendes would look to Monaco but a player like Gomes is not really what the Ligue 1 side need. There's every possibility this is a bluff to reverse the pressure and have Liverpool sweating on the deal.

Gundogan and Piszczek havent really played a game. Hummels and Subotic have been riddled with injury, Schmelzer missed a lot of games now him. They dont even have that big a squad either its like O'Neills Celtic team with all top quality then basically youngsters or cheap diddies as back-up.
