Sam had a cheap buyout clause. Don't see why he wanted to go to a worse team, though.

Where's that amount coming from? Seems awfully low since Heerenveen spent 2.5mil on him just this past summer.

Botafogo are trying to sign Internacional striker Diego Forlán according to Lance, who also believe President Mauricio Assumpção is pushing for the deal to go through.

The main barrier stopping Fogão from signing the former Manchester United player is his wages as the forward receives around £700,000 per month at Colorado.

That figure is similar to what Clarence Seedorf receives and might cause problems for Botafogo financially. They are in need of a big name signing though ahead of their Copa Libertadores campaign.

Forlán has a contract with Internacional until July 2015 but suffered a disappointing Brasileirão season only appearing on 15 occasions, although he did find the net five times.

Botafogo have never properly replaced Sebastián Abreu, a favourite with the fans, who left in 2012 and Forlán could be the man to properly fill that void.

In the Brasileirão, Rafael Marques and Elias were top scorers with ten goals each for Fogão but they will hope a new star forward can inspire them to Copa Libertadores success, maybe Forlán is that man.

Via Taylor Twellman, Michael Bradley of Roma is in talks to return to (North) America to join Toronto. Going back to MLS is shocking enough, but Toronto? MLS sides normally don't give out huge paydays (even to Beckham and Henry, contrary to popular misconception), but after Dempsey's absurd wages I hope that Bradley won't be over-payed. Klinsmann will not be amused. If he's payed correctly, it will be huge for the league. The new collective bargaining agreement is due to be agreed soon and MLS might try to push the salary cap to levels seen in Mexico and Argentina, although Brazil will still most likely be far ahead in that department when it comes to Western hemisphere football.

@holy pope - I really hope Mikey informed his dad of this if you were right that he (Bob) went to Norway to be closer to his son. :86:

Celtic should try and get Bradley as a replacement if Ledley leaves, what sort of wages does he earn? Roma once wanted Ledley as well, probably swap them lol

He's on very low wages. It's kind of an awkward situation, I think Roma abused his trust as a squad player since he's known to be extremely professional and low-drama. But he's one of the lowest-paid players, gets no playing time hardly, and they've knocked back reasonable offers from England. The problem with him (in the eyes of his employers, not me) is that he'll be the good worker up to a point, but once he's broken that's it. He's gone and there's nothing you can do really. He did this at Moenchengladbach earlier in his career as well. In hindsight, he should have stayed there for the last few years.

As far as Celtic go, I think we should try to rush in last minute (the deal for Toronto has developed quickly and is almost complete). It's likely the treatment he's getting that's broken him, not the money. He's the type of player that would thrive at Celtic as well.

    Roughly about £13k a week.

If thats the case then he is more than affordable.

That's after taxes. Even so, it turns out to be around 22k gross. We could easily afford that, even give him a raise.

Irrelevant anyways since some US media types are reporting it as a done deal now. Bradley to MLS is a little surprising (if not shocking), but it's bizarre to see him go to Toronto and to see it happen so fast.

What is the current salary cap and what might it go up to?

I'd suspect there is a major difference between the average wage in Argentina and in Mexico, with Mexico being a much bigger economy and all.

There always seems to be a team in Argentina with money issues (if not most of them), with overall debts being over a billion US dollars, even with the TV deal with the state.

I guess it would go Brazil, Mexico then Argentina/USA in terms of wages?

Mexico has a weird system. There's a bit of a gentleman's agreement not to spend too much money, just like there's one to play offensively. Right now it's at 2.4 million USD/year, but the clubs that take full advantage of the designated player rule (LA, NY, Seattle, and now Toronto I guess) spend around 10 million/year I think. Most clubs are between 2 and 3 million/year. Not a lot by any means.

I agree that Argentina always has money issues, but I think their wages are still pretty high. Maybe a better statement would be that the Argentine clubs generate as much money as the new MLS would but spend as much as the Mexicans. :86:
