Hating the state of Israel is anti-Semitic.

 

There's exceptions to every rule. But to say they are more Catalan than Barcelona isn't true. The club has always represented an opposition to Catalan independence(even is the reality of that is more complex) and Barcelona have always proudly been a symbol of Catlunya. Just look at Barcelona's away top this year.

Aside from perhaps a totally extreme case you are correct - people actually calling this club or that club right or left-wing and being serious about it!

Fine, they may not be more Catalan, but I don't see anything that suggests they are less. I've looked into it a fair bit since reading this thread and I honestly can't find anything to suggest they are a pro-Spanish, anti-Catalan club in this day and age.

It seems there's two arguments that they are, A) their name (which I'm sure you'll agree is irrelevant as it was made 113 years ago), and B) the way the two clubs are seen to represent different causes by others. I know as well as anyone that this can mean nothing, I support a team painted by some as "diet tims" and others as "souptakers" that resent their roots, which I know to be both total bollocks.

The actual facts show that the pro-independence sentiment is practically universal in Catalunya, so clearly that will also be the case amongst the second biggest team in the region. If I supported Espanyol I know I'd laugh at the idea of Barca being the team that represents local pride, when most Espanyol fans are actually from Barcelona and most Barca fans are gloryhunting fanboys from all over the world.

 

Historically Espanyol was the club of the Spanish community living within Catalonia, as Hibby says today there isn't such a distinction between the two.

 

Ok so explain how someones dislike of Isreal translates into a dislike of Jews.

The point,that you missed,is that opposition to the state of Israel does not make you an anti-semetic.Some of the finest vocal opponents of the Zionist state are themselves Jewish,Noam Chomsky,Ilan Pappe and Finklestein to name but a few.

 

Espanyol my not be anti Catalan(at least the majority still a lot of Spain flags at their games) but they certainly aren't pro Catalan like Barcelona.

There's still a good amount of Catalans that don't want independence by the way.

 

I didn't miss that point at all. I said it in my second post in this thread, right here. I even mentioned Anarchists Against the Wall, a group made of Israelis that take part in the protests in Bil'in in the post you quoted. There are great pictures of them smashing through the wall.

The point, which you really did miss is that Anti-Zionists (in the West) grasp virtually everything (out with out right Fascists) seemly anti-Israel in any way. A bunch of crazies like Neturei Karta waiting for the coming of the Messiah, no problem, their Jewish after all. Is it weird being out on an anti-Israel protest with these guys reciting the Shemoneh Esrei?

They aren't Anti-Semitics, obviously, but 'lite' verities of Anti-Semitism are often welcomed into 'the movement' and Anti-Semitism is swept under the carpet. Modern, updated versions of the ZOG conspiracy, Jews bankers, holocaust revisionism etc. Just the fact that Anti-Zionists react in such ways every time it's mentioned shows something, "We don't have a problem with this. Look Jews! Jews!". Anyone of who opposes Israeli aggression and apartheid needs to anti anti-Semitic whenever it's shows it's ugly face. That isn't happening right now. Their to busy trying to save face.

And don't call this criticism of people who base most of their politics off Anti-Israeli things and events 'hasbara'. Nobody in the pay of the Israeli state would call Anarchists Against the Wall the good guys.

I really wouldn't call Barça or Athletic "left-wing", nationalist certainly, but both areas are traditionally conservative. Both governing parties at regional level are right of centre nationalist parties (CIU in Catalunya and PNV in Euskadi).

 

RCD Mallorca are, unfortunately, mostly right-wing.

Millwall Right wing???

Millwall has a long association with Left wing politics actually. The Stepney area of London, a Millwall stronghold was one of only 2 places in UK to have a Communist MP. Labour MP's were Millwall directors. Labour leader John Smith opened the new stadium. Back in the 80's much money was collected by fans in support of the miners. A tiny minority of boneheaded thugs always shown in the media is not a fair representation of the real Millwall FC

 

True but things change a lot of Millwall fans moved out of their area. The Millwall fanbase are mainly in areas like Kent now. West Ham were also a socialist club who mainly voted for old Labour but now like Millwall most of their fans are from Tory right leaning areas like Essex and that definitely has changed the culture of the support.
