    Sorry, I thought you had made it quite clear in this thread: 'its a game about people kicking a ball about' and 'Its a sports club, playing a game'. If supporting Celtic is indeed more than just watching a game of football for you, what does that mean?

    You could argue, whether we're conscious of it or not, that politics plays a role in almost everything and anything we do. Politics isn't just confined to rallies, parliaments and polling booths. Even the most trivial choices can/could be regarded as such, for example where someone shops, what someone buys, what sports/hobbies/interests their exposed to, their family role, their role in the workplace etc, and perhaps even more importantly, how they define themselves through memberships or attachments to groups, associations and even football clubs. It's all political, albeit sometimes with only a small 'p'.

    The creation of Celtic could almost certainly be regarded as political. An Irish Marist Brother along with prominent members of Glasgow's early Irish community creating a football club as a charity to help the poor- the majority of whom were Irish Catholics, victims of a politically-induced famine/genocide, hated in their adopted city/country because of their religion, nationality, customs etc (i.e. their politics). It's only natural that such an institution, where crowds of like-minded people would regularly gather, would see it's 'politics'/identity shaped by the most important aspect of any football club- its supporters. And, as I mentioned early, throughout Celtic's history its supporters have been quite clear and consistant in defining what the club means.

    Now clearly not everyone buys into that, and people can support Celtic (and other clubs) for whatever reason(s) they want, however, people should understand and respect that many others regard it as being much bigger than 'a sports club, playing a game' or just 'people kicking a ball about'.

    Here we go again with the age old discussion on here of

    Left = Good
    Right = Bad

    :56:

    I posted when this thread first started saying that teams fans are generally mixed and to say one is on the right and one is on the left, the only thing between clubs that are seen as left or right wing is that you get groups of fans within the club that believe they speak for the whole support when they spout their *.

    Jewish teams are probably a grey area on here, I like Ajax and Tottenham but there's a few on here that don't because of Israel and Palestine.

    It's funny how the extreme left and hardcore *'s can both say they have something in common when it comes to antisemitism :icon_mrgreen:

    There's a difference between Anti-Semitism and Anti-Zionism.

    I did read a thread on here not long ago with the poster saying that he would rather Gershon didn't play for Celtic because he said he was proud to have served for Israel and a number of posters agreed with him.

    You'll find this is Anti-Semitism

    No.

    I can't even be asked to explain it to you.

    Read.

    Were they saying they didn't want him to play because he was Jewish?

    You can try and butter it up all you want, it's antisemitism plain and simple and a sheer hatred of Israel.

    Hating Israel for its foreign policy stance etc. Is Anti-Zionism.

    Hating someone for being Jewish is classed as Anti-Seminitsm,

    It's not even the right term, as there are Semitic Muslims.

    To clear up the difference between the two:

    Antisemitism - prejudice, hatred of, or discrimination against Jews for reasons connected to their Jewish heritage

    Antizionism - opposition to Zionistic views or opposition to the state of Israel

    What is Zionism will no doubt be going through your head by now...

    A form of nationalism of Jews and Jewish culture that supports a Jewish nation state in the territory defined as the Land of Israel.

    * sake. disliking or hating israel is not anti-semitism. does hating the USA make you anti-Protestant? Anti-Jewry (i hate the term ant-semitism, it's an inaccurate moniker, Arabs and Turks are semites as well) is abhorrent, it is racism. Being anti-Israel is only natural if you possess the slightest compassion towards your fellow human beings.

    “Every single member of my family on both sides was exterminated. Both of my parents were in the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. And it is precisely and exactly because of the lessons my parents taught me and my two siblings that I will not be silent when Israel commits its crimes against the Palestinians. If you had any heart at all, you would be crying for the Palestinians, not Israel."
    Norman Finkelstein

    Notice by his name, Finkelstein is a Jew, yet is outspoken critic of Israel and has also said that Israel have no right to any lands they have taken since 1967. Is he a Jew hater as well?

    You beat me to the point Breenzo!

    A global brand PLC who punt US sports corporations, alcohol companies, and credit cards, for money, while over-pricing tickets to pay for pampered players, hardly strikes me as a beacon of Socialism.

    Of course there is a culture that exists around many clubs, but the left/right division is far too simplistic. In the case of Celtic people seems to define their "left wing" nature by being pro-republican and anti-facist. As if you cant be a right of centre republican. And as if every right-minded person isnt anti-facist. And as if being "left wing" is specific to Celtic, when you only need to go to any club in Fife or Dundee or Aberdeen to find most of their fans are most likely "left wing" as well.

    It is all a bit silly, self indulgent, and simple-minded in my opinion.

    The majority of CFC fans have working class roots, this is fact, if they wish to indulge in the socialist\leftie thing, that is their prerogative, no one should demean this:icon_mrgreen:

    Those clubs are not Jewish. Tottenham are English and Ajax are Dutch. And you do get very racist Jewish clubs like Beitar Jerusalem who are known to often hold up banners saying "keep the team pure" "only jews allowed" "No Arabs" all sound pretty racist to me.

    I am not demeaning them. What I am saying is that 1.) trying to argue celtic is a "socialist" club is a nonsense, and 2.) it is hardly specific to Celtic but rather typical of most Scottish football fans.
