Well put & i couldnt agree more.. i think todays young "hipster" 26 county Irishman sees Celtic as a relic of the recent past that they dont want to be associated with anymore. they see your average Celtic fans as either a young ned or a heavy republican,, for them its "cooler" to talk about Liverpool Man U etc & all the top foreign players that they attract than a team which in there eyes is linked to support of the "terrorists" that they read about it,, in my opinon since leaving here your average 20 something Irishmans knowledge of what has actually went on in the 6 counties is either very biased anti-IRA or they have no knowledge at all,, patriotism seems to be a dirty word nowadays over here to a certain extent!

While I wouldnt be critical of them for it, in my experience this is pretty much true. I have many Irish friends (north and south) from my uni days. Of the lot of them there were two who supported celtic as a second team to man utd. There were two who supported rangers as a second team to liverpool. And the vast majority wanted nothing to do with either - a mix of having a pretty negative opinion of all the nonsense that goes with the old firm, and not really giving a toss about the SPL. There was always a small "hardcore" northern irish rangers support around who were your typical bigoted idiots but even that was a tiny number compared to the many who supported teams in the EPL.

For a lot of people, particularly in the north (but in the south as well) both celtic and rangers are seen in a pretty negative light.

it would be fantastic but unfortunatly i would say no.

most dont care past man utd or liverpool if they are even interesting in football in first place, and even then in my experience most simply term the Old Firm as horrible sectarian * who are shameful to football. just like typical ignorant english fans realy, no real knowledge of the club.

once you get past that, i would say it is probably equal between rangers and celtic. for example when celtic played swansea and cardiff in friendlies in pre season on both club's forums there were equal amount of rangers and celtic fans on there arguing back and forth.

real patriot welshmen support celtic though. it is impossible to be a welsh nationalist and support a unionist club.

Do you know that for sure or are you basing this on a few friends you have from the ROI? Are you a regular visitor or what? If not then you have no idea what celtics support is like in the south.

As I said before Tyrone... I'm basing it on what I get told by the folks I know who live in, or are from, the ROI.

It's not an exhaustive survey, but my travels have introduced me to a fairly broad spread of folk from the ROI...

You think we are limited by the Irish Republican "stuff"?

Have you seen the support we have around the world?

Now I know you are just referring to the Celts, but I think we are doing quite well as a club in attracting new fans just as we are :50:

It’s the same with the North though.

I don’t really see a difference between the two.

There are Celtic supporters all over Ireland, but it’s nowhere near the level it used to be. We are falling way behind United and Liverpool.

You’re probably more likely to find people supporting the likes of Chelsea now, rather than Celtic.

Personally, I find 'The Republic' offensive.

Going out of your way to say free state is having a dig at us that live down here, when people say "free staters" they imply were all nothing but west brits.

I suppose, it’s just a habit.

After all, the 26C = the free part of Ireland.

Well good for you Tim! We can only base our opinions on what we see / hear... and I've seen / heard that the support for Celtic in the ROI is not as widespread as I'd been led to believe by some fellow Scots-based Celtic fans!

Dont agree with that, I dont know anyone who supports Chelsea. My brother has a Chelsea top because he thinks its a nice top but he doesnt support Chelsea he supports Celtic. Overall ive seen very little Chelsea supporters but small number of glory hunters popped up when the Russian took over but they probably follow Man City now as gloryhunters do.

Well there you are they are scots based. I am IRISH based i travel to dublin to watch ireland. Believe me id be surprised if celtic were not the first or second most supported team in ireland
