Shouldn't they be supporting Irish league teams first before any English or Scottish team?

Well, surely supporting home grown talent first is better than latching onto successful SPL or Premiership teams.

But they don't have to to anything. I don't really care what team anyone supports :icon_mrgreen:

When i "Latched" onto Celtic,we were not a very successful team,it is a handed down thing in most families to support Celtic.

There is next to no t.v coverage of out games,so i guess you could say it is in the blood, maybe people enjoy the big crowds, the professional athletes on show.

Without our Irish connection we would be nowhere near a big a Club as we are.

    Where does this,support your local,stop ?

How many miles from your doorstep should you not go beyond,or is it just different countries teams you should not support ?

Would you say the same for footballers, they should play for their local teams only ?

It is a daft argument and statement i think.

whos to say we cant support our local irish league team plus be big fans of celtic ?

I follow my local team (derry city) aye , but celtic to me are a club ive loved and followed since i was 10 . I'm 26 now .

Irish born , just like the diaspora in scotland ..should be able to identify with the club. A club which represents a level of irishness on a greater scale at european level , than any irish club team will ever do.

Celtic are more Irish than most of the teams in Ireland.

When I look at Derry, I see my city, which is fair enough.

But when I look at Celtic, I see my people, nothing can compete with that.

My sister is a massive tim and married a Kerry man from Ardfert who had very little knowledge of football never mind Celtic. He was GAA daft and saw football as a "garrison game. That was until he attended Paddy Bonners testimonial many moons ago and he couldn't believe the level of love and affection Celtic fans had for Ireland.Ever since then he has been Celtic daft(although his first love will always be GAA)and I'm proud to say my wee nieces and nephews are now running around the Banna with Celtic tops on.Hail x 2

    yeh, totally man, i understand.

It's just weird how people were bashing folk for supporting English teams rather than Celtic. If they have no family ties, "blood" or whatever then they have basically chosen a team to support. Which in turn usually turns out to be the bigger clubs.

I just feel for the wee teams left struggling finacially and to get people to come watch. That's all :icon_mrgreen:

They can support who they want.

Are Celtic big in Wales as a 2nd team? I like the idea of Celtic being pan-Keltic and appealing to all the Kelts which I think is limited by the Irish republican political stuff. It would be nice for us to adopt Land of our Fathers and Flower and maybe Breton and Cornish stuff (they have an unofficial national anthem that pretty good) as well as the existing love of the Soldier Song. It would widen our appeal among the Kelts. Probably our biggest failing is to woo a larger number of Scottish people of the Scots Gaelic identity in our own country. We do get support from the catholic parts of the highlanders and islanders but it would be nice for us to be the definitive club representing all the Keltic peoples.

The EPL has become so massive in Ireland in the past decade that the SPL is now a virtual non-entity.

The thing is, Irish people are no longer nationalist-minded. So supporting clubs like Celtic doesn’t really have an appeal to the Celtic Tiger generation.

The South has vastly moved on from its Republican heritage, Irish people now prefer Anglo-Saxon culture to their own.

In Ireland nowadays, all that matters is the X Factor, Manchester United, and English tabloids.

The Irish people, in general, are much more British than they are Irish.

Exactly right mate there's not a day goes buy but the national news RTE has
something to report from the British government what the * do I or any other Irish man
    wants to know about England

I just wouldnt shutup about celtic and got him to come along to a Celtic pub for a huns match and it more or less confirmed him in with us! the atmosphere the places can generate would be hard for anyone not to love!

Ever since then he has fallen in love the sap:84: ha

When we went to that pub the vaults under connoly station for the huns match back in september he said something along the lines of this

"I've never come across a more friendly and welcoming loada fans, you go anywhere and as long as both people are Celtic supporters they will be your best mate"

    Sums it up really!

Thank you all for this and your many posts. Before I sit down with a bottle of red and the weekend highlights, permit me to add my thoughts on your contributions.

It seems that being an Irish Celtic supporter is fundamentally linked to republicanism. The greater degree of republicanism, the more likely to support Celtic and the lesser degree of republicanism, less likely to support Celtic.

Essentially then, Celtic is seen more as a republican icon and less as a definition of Irishness? If this is true then we need to focus on redefining Celtic as a representation of Irishness for there to be a long, strong and productive link between the two.

How do we do this together?

    Once again thanks to all

That's how I see it. I would go further and say that Celtic is more of a republican icon primarily to those who live in the UK (particularly Scotland and NI). I base this on the number of folks I know from the Republic who aren't really interested in the situation north of the border.

im irish so thought i should add my bit here!

never really had a team, sort of followed the premiership results and celtic were a side i keept an eye on aswell, loved playing soccer and all that, just hadnt fallen in love with football itself if ya get me?

that was until i went over to glasgow with a few mates for a weekend and a game!
it was a preseason game and arsenal were in town, had tickets for the south stand that day,ill never forget the reaction viera got as he warmed up,the whole place shouting viera..viera oh oh oh viera!! anyway we won that day, liam miller with the only goal!

i basically fell in love with celtic from that day and couldnt care less about any other team since then,i feel sorry for some of the other irish lads who dont actually love their club because it is a special love and yet they talk down the spl!!
its hard to describe how stupid they sound at times but i see it as their loss anyway and dont debate it much, just tell them what celtic means to me!!

go over to games whenever i can, havent been in a while and had flights and tickets got for next thursdays game and a night on the tiles in town after but cant go cos recently had a kid and hes getting out of hospital next week but cant wait to go over in jan or feb,id rather stay in all x-mas and use the money to get over to see the hoops

so basically my love of celtic isnt republican minded, its just a love for our wonderful club

    hail hail:celt_2:

Sorry but but celtic our in no doubt in the top 3 most supported teams in Ireland . Manchester united , liverpool And celtic . In belfast alone there is a celtic
Store and countless csc. Believe me celtic are huge in ireland. Also it is not unusual for someone to support celtic and liverpool/ man united

That being said. Man u opened a store here in derry, closed after a year. Liverpool didnt even try. Celtic have one here about 10 years now.
That alone tells you a story. The only club shop in the city.
