I grew up thinking that everyone in Éire was a Celtic fan, but as I progressed through life and met more folk from Eire as I travelled the globe, it dawned on me that it was a load of BS!

Most I've met couldn't give a monkeys about Celtic. Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd seem much more popular!

When it comes to genuine football supporters who regularly travel to support their team then Celtic are still no.1 in Ireland in my opinion. The typical EPL fan over here shows their support to 'their club' (i use the term very * loosely!) by putting on a replica jersey on Sat or Sun and rambling down to their local pub to spout a whole load of * about how 'we' this and 'we' that! This same gobshite will probably travel to old trafford or anfield etc on a 'package trip' once every few years! Thankfully you dont find this type of 'supporter' amongst the hooped legions... genuine supporters who over the years we meet again and again, from Lisbon, Barcelona, Hamburg, Villareal, Stuttgart to the gallowgate, always the same faces... Celtic is so much more than a team to us!! Hail Hail

were you in the aviva a few months back? I went for the inter game n it was far from a sell out, and bear in mind that the aviva is 30,000 less capacity then croke park! And even at that honestly 60-70% of the accents I could here around me sounded like they were from the north and nearly all the flags were from supporters clubs in the north!

Definitely agree with this, were outnumbered by the epl brigade down here but they don't have the connection with their clubs as we do

Yes I was at this game. I also personally know five people who planned to attend this game but did not because Donegal were playing in Croke Park on the same day. This tournament was played in coincidence with the all Ireland quater finals in Gaelic football

Ye i see your point and its True that would of had a big bearing on the Donegal contingent but by a few thousand maximum, if it hadve been scheduled for a weekend with no Gaelic or hurling fixtures it still wouldn't have sold out the aviva

its the same in scotland. If all the scottish people who support epl teams supported scottish teams then every ground would be at full capacity.

There's a recession ffs going to football matches isn't top of the list for your average fan in Ireland. If there was one game instead if two there would be a better crowd. Also the Ireland matches at the aviva have rarely sold out, so there must not be many Ireland fans in Ireland then:50:

I'm not Irish, but would like to ask why Irish TV doesn't show any Celtic matches?

    Not any more.

The EPL has become so massive in Ireland in the past decade that the SPL is now a virtual non-entity.

The thing is, Irish people are no longer nationalist-minded. So supporting clubs like Celtic doesn’t really have an appeal to the Celtic Tiger generation.

The South has vastly moved on from its Republican heritage, Irish people now prefer Anglo-Saxon culture to their own.

In Ireland nowadays, all that matters is the X Factor, Manchester United, and English tabloids.

The Irish people, in general, are much more British than they are Irish.

    Haha cheeky git! :icon_mrgreen:

The point I'm debating tho is the stone cold fact that Celtic would not sell out croke park.

Watching x factor or supporting Man Utd doesn't make u British. I watch alot of American Tv shows and movies, doesn't make me American.

Probably because Non Celtic fans would be in no hurry to watch the games because of the * standard of other teams.

They are not going to pay the dosh that Sky tv do.

So the answer probably is,not enough people would watch,SPL does not have any major appeal to Non SPL Fans.

Bear in mind, these are the type of creeps who tend to sneer or look down upon native Irish culture, or native Irish history.

How many people in Ireland can actually speak our native tongue?

Don’t you just cringe when you hear the Irish youth talking in silly Americanisms?

"* dude, did you see Jersey Shore last night on MTV"

    "Yeah, it was awesome"

This is the type of * I’m lifting off my Facebook.

Irish TV would not have to cover the SPL in general, just Celtic matches. If RTE started to cover Celtic matches then I am sure interest in Celtic would increase vastly. For me RTE are an anti republican station who do not want to see support for Celtic increase in the 26 counties.

Well that must be what it's like we're you live but were I'm at it's not like that at all. Maybe the current generation in the south arent as politically aware and patriotic as us in the north I don't know.

Only the hun games. Would you not agree if RTE showed highlights of Celtics game weekly in their MOTD program that interest in Celtic would increase significantly in Ireland ?

Oh aye definetely yeah, highlights are easier to watch than the full 90 minutes and interest would grow.
