As someone has said earlier, it’s very much a generational thing.

The Celtic support in Ireland is waning quite considerably, both North and South.

That’s not to say there aren’t many good Tims in Ireland, but we are now dwarfed by EPL clubs – mostly United and Liverpool.

United and Liverpool have always had a strong support in Ireland. Although we are probably still the third most popular team, the number of Tims is now massively below these two.

Irish channels no longer show any Celtic game. RTE used to show all the Old Firm games, and some SPL games (usually league deciders) but there hasn’t been a Celtic game on Irish TV for years (bar Champions League)

What hasn’t helped is the fact we’re also dire. We did attract a fair amount of glory hunters in the MON era, you would see Hoops everywhere; so obviously, there has always been a plastic element who have followed Celtic.

I still know loads of Tims here, we still a popular team, but for every Tim I know, I know about 5 EPL supporters.

Incidentally, Rangers are non-existent in Ireland, even in the North. They’ve never been well followed.

In terms of numbers, we’re now falling way below United and Liverpool, and indeed perhaps Arsenal and Chelsea.

However, in terms of actual support – as in those who go to games – we’re probably still in pole position.

Celtic takes more season tickets from Ireland than any other club in the UK.

Irish people who support man unt, Liverpool etc are just as much glory hunters as the ones supporting Celtic.

The SPL is a * league, I don’t see how following a team in it, could be considered glory hunting.

Even if Celtic win, it’s just the SPL. It’s hardly something that’s going to make the rest of Europe sit up and take notice.

I am the same as yourself. I have always supported Celtic. My first memories are the 1980 Scottish Cup Final.

I think interest in Celtic has died down ever since the MON era. I was in getting my haircut one day and was talking to the barber and he asked me who i supported. I told him it was Celtic and he said to me "aw yeah i used to support them but i support united now" he even had a celtic crest tatood on his chest! Whenever he told me that I lost all respect for him, he told me he got sick of watching crap football, it was obvious he was just a glory hunter. It really sickens me too because a lot of people in my school think i support celtic just because im a Catholic, the boy that said it was obviously a united fan and i just ate him about how he is a glory hunting *:50:

I posted on another thread about the media in ireland north & south. While in wicklow in august i got the sunday papers , the back pages & 9 pages in were devoted to the epl. Then 10 in celtic in a small paragraph. Mre inches were spread on f1 racing.
Its been like this for years, hence the younger generation being open to english clubs. Celtic plc need to act and not rest on their laurels.

Im 16 and not a whole lot of people my age follow Celtic in Dublin, but as has already been said, the ones that do seem to be more passionate about Celtic than the EPL fans are about their clubs. I've called my mates glory supporters for following ManU and they've actually had the nerve to call me a glory supporter for following Celtic, because 'we win the SPL every year.'

Pretty sad to hear this. I'm surprised we still have a shitload more supporters clubs - but I reckon this is down to the real hardcore fans in Ireland. It's sad because being stuck in the SPL, I can only see us getting smaller. I genuinely hate the EPL because it's just so commercial. They're making inroads in Asia, established in Europe, and now they'll be looking to get coverage in the US. The way I see it, they'll keep us starved of money/coverage, so people north of the border start following EPL teams.

Was thinking about moving over to Ireland or Boston/NY once I finish uni as I've got family there. Having been to states and loved it, I can't help feeling that I may have been blinkered in my view of Ireland and might be disappointed by what i find, as I've not been yet. It's still a massive personal draw to me though.

:50: good lad! I dont think the Celtic support is back on the rise. There was a serious dip over the last few years as compared to the MON years.

When I was growing up everyone I knew supported Celtic but the current generation of kids are mainly EPL fans with many having Celtic as there second team as all they see on TV is EPL. but there is still a decent amount of tims. There hasnt been any real coverage of Celtic over here since MON left but that hasnt stopped the Hardcore tims from jumping ship.

One thing I cant stand is when Scots come over here and act all dissapointed that the streets arent filled with everyone wearing Celtic tops and some bars dont show Celtic matches. Just because Celtic has Irish roots doesnt mean that everyone is going to be a Celtic fan. Ive even heard a scottish guy say you arent a real Irishman if you dont support Celtic and tbh I hate that attitude.

Could not disagree with this anymore!! How many people you basing this on because I could balance this out by saying as a Dubliner I can tell you Celtic is loved here! Go into 90% of the bars you will see some sort of Celtic memorabilia. If Celtic played a game at Croke park it would be a sell out!! How man other clubs could leave their home country play in another and it be a sell out, maybe just Barcelona and Man Utd

There's been lots of Ireland Celtic comments on here over the last month or so and I'm not sure what some people's agenda is. But Celtic and Ireland will always go hand in hand

    Hail Hail
