From the little I remember of Maths in school, you actually need the equation to have the brackets in it in the first place in order to use BOMDAS do you not? Otherwise you just follow it through normally.

I was pish at Maths right enough, so I could well be talking *.

Naw mate the point of BODMAS is that it tells you what to do when there are no brackets. If there were brackets, there'd be no need for BODMAS. :50:

Fair enough. I don't remember being told the existence of brackets eliminated the need for BOMDAS/BODMAS though, rather it was just a simple method of remembering the order of doing the equation. Which is why I seem to remember only being told to use it when brackets were already there; but then again it was only in class, so they would have been there for that purpose anyway :smiley-laughing002::50:

When i left school in 1980 with an A pass in Maths when there was no brackets in a sum you started from 1st number and worked along that way. If however there were brackets then they were calculated first then start at beginning.
So, no brackets showing then it's start at beginning.

Had an argument with my Arithmetic teacher in High School as he said my answer was wrong from a question he set up.
The head of the maths department heard the argument and came into the class wondering what was going on. When he found out, he looked at the question and the answer the teacher gave and said that he needed to go back to class as my answer was right.
Only 3 in class got it right.

Just used the calculator on PC and it also shows the answer as 1.

Haha love that, teachers thing they're smarter than anyone but really that isn't the case.

Calculators aren't capable of doing order of operations, they do it as they see it. The calculator may give 1, but I'm certain it's 41 mate.

I thought BODMAS was a footballer when I first heard of it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that pretty much everyone doesn't give a * what the answer is in the scheme of things.

I'd much rather learn about the electoral success of the environmental parties across Europe.

    Honest.

    Just looked up Bomdas system.
Using that the answer is 41. (* system)
The reason i am saying its 1 is that at school i was never ever taught to use that system. No one at school that i know of was taught that system.
If there were NO brackets in the equation then we were taught to count from start to finish with NO emphasis being put on multiplication/division first.
If there were however brackets then and ONLY then did we calculate them first.
Must have done it right because if i used the Bomdas !!? system i would have
not got a pass mark and would have failed the exam.

    It's poorly written maths, that's why there's a problem :56:

Same. Went back to college after 4 years working. Attendance and effort was great at college, first year at uni missed around half of everything then this year I've been to a grand total of one lecture, three tutorials and 6 labs the entire year. Couldn't even tell you where my economics and sociology lectures/tutorials are held. :icon_mrgreen: Just cant be arsed with it anymore even though I actually enjoy psychology. Hopefully get better next year when I can drop economics and sociology.

This is for students at Glasgow Caley. As you're probably aware the uni has decided to change the exams until after Christmas despite 92% of those who voted in the recent referendum being against this. Obviously we're not very happy about this and are trying to organise a campaign against this.

No wonder. Ignoring such an overwhelming student feeling is appalling.

Would hate to be doing exams after Christmas, love getting them all out the way before so I can enjoy the festive period.

What's the reasoning for going against the wishes of the overwhelming majority?

Their given reason is that the turnout at the vote was low but even at that 92% voted no. There was no point in the vote in the first place if they were going to change it anyway. I have yet to meet a single person in favour of the change

Hmm Aberdeen Uni have done the same but the exact opposite, we have exams after christmas, they put a vote to students if they want them before, students said no but they are changing them anyway.
