.....or backwards. I can see a time where we are called Glasgow Greens or Strathclyde Hoops even. As long as it makes money.

I'd rather the club started again with real supporters. Celtic fans who cherish our history rather than be ashamed of it.

You want the ethnic Irish to go home and you wan to see Celtic's attendances diminish.

Are you seriously a Celtic fan?

So what i'm getting from your argument is: You attend a lot of Celtic games so you can sing songs that may get Celtic in to trouble and give us a bad name across Britain and probably one of the fundamental reasons we will never be invited to play in England and break away from Scotland, possibly giving our club a chance of rebuilding itself.
The fact that you attend a lot of games and someone like me doesn't isn't because you love Celtic more than I do, it's a fact of location and financial boundaries, which you seem LUCKY enough not to be hindered by.

Nobodys ashamed of our history but singing songs glorifying the IRA is not very clever .

Again. What do you have against Irish heroes that fought and won their independence after years of genocide and discrimination?

    please shut up.
i don't regard them as heros.

but this just goes to show that if i did, i would not be welcome to sing about these "heros" at celtic park. when i should be able to sing what i want, what with it being open to all and such

    your way or the highway:38:

    one word 'libya'

and british soldiers are welcomed in open arms at ibrox. dont see the media saying that has nothing to do with football.

Lawell cant say anything reguarding celtic and politics, when he give the green light to put blood stained poppies on our shirts

He told me to go back to Ireland in an other thread and he said he would want us to be banned which would see attendances diminish.

They are contentious for the following reasons:

    1. They split the club. The board dont want them. The manager doesnt. Jock Stein didnt. A lot of fans dont want them. Whether it is a 50/50 split or not, this issue always causes contention.

    2. There are fans who will not take their kids to games or distance themselves from the club because they do not want to introduce their children to songs about the IRA or debates about the IRA, or discuss about politics at all. They just want to watch their favourite football team play a game of football.

    3. It antagonises opposition fans. You really dont see why going to places like Manchester and London and singing songs celebrating the organisation that bombed their cities would be considered contentious? You dont get why people may not want to be part of that regardless of their politics. Im guessing that * forbid something happened to one of your loved ones at the hands of a PIRA bomb you would not be so loud in celebrating them at a game of football.

    4. It continues animosity between old firm fans. Celtic fans sing terrorist songs and the other half claim offence. Then they sing songs about killing fenians, so then celtic fans claim offence. Then they both try to get each other in trouble because of how terribly offended everyone is. Rangers fans claim moral high ground because they dont support terrorism. Celtic fans claim moral high ground because they arent sectarian. It is an embarrassment.

There are 4 reasons why these songs are contentious and embarrassing.

I think that question needs asked of many in this thread, some of the comments are unbelievable. They sound like they want to run the club into the ground.

Why does it have to be clever? We are upholding a long standing tradition of supporting the IRA and the Republican movement in general.

We would not be discussing this 25 years ago. What has happened to our supporters?

Why are Celtic a "special" club? Please, some one answer why we are universally liked by other Clubs supporters all over the world? Its not because we sing * depeche mode songs.

If the huns sang songs about the Brittish army killing Irish people I think we all agree that would be very offensive to us . So whats the differance about some of us singing songs about the IRA ?

Celtic are a club open to all unless you want to sing about Irish heroes.

Exactly. I completely agree with you. Some would prefer us to turn into Glasgow Hibernian.
