    Without, because without religion, there would be no religious fueled wars, no secterianism, ect.

    Would both sides of the 'Old Firm' be what they are today without religion?

    I don't believe in any repercussions in the afterlife and I don't go around causing destruction, whereas many religious extremists do and they cause immeasurable death and destruction.

    It is possible to be governed by your own morality without believing in a fairy tale religion.

    yeah i understand mate np, just my view, and i respect yours. however my religion (catholisism) doesnt take the bible literally all the time, so the bloke in the clouds stuff is a bit off, but made me laugh (in a good way):50:

    i supose its the same with some laws that still exist today, and other beliefs just how you interprit them.

    however i agree that a mix of religion and science can exist IMO (even though its sometimes a clash). but although we have become quite advanced and visited oher planets, we still cannot reach the depths of our oceans, and we are running out of resources with no full on substitute. science still doesnt have alot of answers and we a still pretty clueless about what exisits on our own planet never mind elsewhere, with new specials being found every week!

    and on another point , maybe religion was used for control back in the day partially (or fully), but in modern day the government of the leading countries in the world do that to us. for example having to pay Council tax or you go to prison! or our work force having to work rediculous hours of the day, our modern press (papers, radio, TV etc) are about as censored as they have ever been. maybe religion wasnt much better in the old times, but one thing for sure is that it isnt the leader in controlling us today.....thats the modern government and the international monetary fund.

    As Marx once said religion is the opium of the people.

    i agree in what martibhoy said aswell, as i think we can govern ourselves, but i think this is also due to religion shapeing our morality over a long period of time to modern day.

    however i accept and agree that a large degree comes from within!

    Religion is an idealistic belief that is replaced by another idealism if its not present. You could say communism was a religion. They all have people who believe and people who do not conform and are then persecuted used as slaves or hated. Capitalism is the same we have a small group of people who rule the world by controlling wealth and the rest are slaves.
    Doom and gloom for evermore:54::54:

    Too much of a simple question. The reality is that it's whether society and the characteristics of it can accommodate the religion not the religion accommodating the society. For example, our society can, to an extent, maintain religious freedom however other regions of the world cannot. Much of the world lives by complying to the social contracts of the nation/territory they're in therefore if your religion wasn't the status quo iit would be frowned upon and will create friction in the society, demonstrating its inability to accommodate all peoples.

    Forgetting that for a second, if you think of religion as a set of boundries and stories which tell us about right and wrong, good, bad and evil as well as offering us guidance then yeah I think religion is good and has a place. Not so keen on religious dictatorships such as how the Roman Catholic church used to operate and not all that keen of Islam.

    Hmm I was thinking, do you all think Buddhism is a religion? I mean the main message is that there are no gods and bhuddism doesnt want to be involved in the world politics at all.
    It is the only peaceful religion I say
