being Welsh rugby is high on my list of priorities...i play it, i live it.

however..not club rugby but international....this is probably where rugby differs from football in that to most people its country before club.

indeed, the clubs dont really have good attendances....look at The Ospreys. before this season for the last 7 years they have had almost the entire Welsh squad in their first time and were known as the Galacticos of European Rugby...squad full of stars but underachieving bottlers....yet attendances were like 8000. with the same players that sell out internationals 80k.

I'm an Ospreys fan myself and most Swans/Ospreys fans dont lke each other...which is wierd to me as i dont find the games mutally unexclusive. we share ground ffs, we're like sister clubs but there we go.

I'd prob say Llanelli Scarlets are Celtic-minded in that they are the welshy club, more nationalistic in their songs.

Love watching Rugby. Rugby and Gaelic football have always been the other sports I enjoy the most. Being Irish and from Dublin I have always been a Leinster and Ireland supporter. Which for the most part have been good times over the last few years.

I do not have a clue about it, I know the rules and I support Ireland and Scotland, but I have to ask: Is there a Celtic league? I heard something about the league that is played by clubs from Celtic countries-Ireland, Scotland and Wales?

Watch a little bit of rugby when I moved to Sydney... tended to follow the ACT Brumbies in what was then the Super 12. Truth be told, apart from Internationals, I probably followed rugby league more than union... Up the mighty Rabbitohs!

I went to the Super 12 final, in Canberra, to watch the Brumbies win. Needless to say I have more than a soft spot for them. There was a time when I was more of a Brumbies fan than anything else in the world of soccer or American sports.

Not really, I like Leeds to do well. They were my super league team when I played NRL on the PS2. But really I just like to see the Australian boys who move over there do well especially players I like such as Danny Buderus.

Look out of the Knights in 2012, recruited well for next season.

What is the difference between Rugby League and Rugby Union?

Also, I was watching the news today and the sports presenter said something along the lines of "This club could make history if they win the grand final this weekend and the All Blacks win as well" Something like that anyway..

I'm assuming that team are from New Zealand but wouldn't these players be playing in the WC if they are that good?(Getting to the Grand Final)

The only rugby teams I know are Toulouse and Wigan Warriors. Probably know a few more just cant remember, not clued up on rugby at all.

Oh and of course the mighty Greenock Wanderers!:icon_mrgreen:

The Rugby Union World Cup is taking place at the moment. The Rugby League (NRL) season in Australia, which has teams from NZ in it, is in the Finals stages, that's what you would be getting confused about.

There are numerous differences between the 2 codes. For the sake of understanding, I will relate to one as 'Union' & the other as 'League'.

In Union, teams of 15 (7 'backs' & 8 'forwards')
League has teams of 13 (7 'backs' & 6 'forwards')

Generally speaking, the forwards do the hard yakka & require strength, whereas the backs rely more on speed and skill.

Union is reliant on field position
    League is reliant on possession

Union, when a player is tackled, they must release the ball immediately & defenders only need to be a in line will the last line of the maul.

League, when a player is tackled, they must be released, so they can regain their feet & 'play the ball' back to their team, whilst the defenders must retreat 10 metres from the 'play the ball' area.

Union, possession can be potentially retained indefinately.
League, a team has only 6 tackles before they have to hand over possession. Normally this means a team will use the ball for 5 tackles & then kick for field position.

There are a few others, but based on this, when you see a game you will know virtually straight away if you are watching league or union.

    Sounds really complicated.

Would a Rugby League player play in a Rugby Union game or tournament? If so are these NRL players not good enough to play for their country or do they choose club before country?

Or do you get Union national teams and Rugby League national teams and they don't play with each other?

rugby league shirts look dodgy as well, thats another difference lol.

there are both league and union national teams. think of rugby league and rugby union as two different sports. like kickboxing and muay thai, they share similarities but are also very different.

i used to play union. started off at hooker, strangely sometimes filling in at full back!!!, then as i got taller i got moved back to flanker, which i enjoyed the most. just waiting on their nine to touch the ball at the back of the scrum and then nailing him...brilliant. buggered my knee though and am now about as mobile as davie weir.

i support scotland and leinster but really like watching the tri nations teams, samoa, fiji and france and like to see wales and ireland do well

    This.

Some players have crossed over from one code to the other & vice versa, but can't play both. Traditionally, Union was for amateurs, whilst league was the professional code, but in the past 15-20 years, Union has gone professional also, meaning players now have more choice of which code suits them best.

In Australia for instance, league is far more popular at a club level, in terms of participation, spectators, money & TV but there are fewer countries that really are competitive at International level aside from NZ, Aus & Eng. But then again, the representative State of Origin series is a major highlight of the league season in Australia.

Union, for it's part, the clubs are very average & poorly supported. It is not until they get to the representative Super12 & International levels that it attracts much attention, either from the public or the media.
