We play 4-5-1 with sammy up top, we're destined to lose 2-0, looking alright through out the game, but lacking an cutting edge and letting in a couple of simple, yet talented goals.
We go 4-4-2, the same squad as we did on the week end, we might lose 4-0, or we might fluke a couple of goals, by selecting a starting 11 that show's confidence, we'll play with confidence, by selecting one that shows negativity, we'll play negative, and we all know Celtic can't do a defensive game.

    I think your right stainsey

besides with Broony out were struggling to make up numbers in midfield and might not have enough for a 5 man midfield, it just wouldnt work

    so

    Forster

    Matthews KWilson Wanyama Mulgrew

    MWilson Kayal Ledley Commons

    Forrest Bangura

Quote from neil Lennon when asked how hard it will be to leave Forrest out the team, 'I don't see any reason why I should'

Sort of suggests he is going to go with more positive tactics than he has previously. Like Levein mentioned, people mistake 4-5-1 as being negative. It all depends on the players you pick and the approach you take. If it's 4-5-1 with Forrest and McCourt/Commons on the wings then i'll be more than happy with this.

However as people have mentioned we have never really been effective at 4-5-1. We dont have the type of forward to play the lone striker role, and its too early to tell if Bangura will be that guy.

I say we go with what we know we are good at and surprise Athletico by having a go at them. 442 with Hooper, Stokes and Forrest all playing.

I really do not know how we may/should line up for this. We destroyed Motherwell on Saturday, not because they were poor, but because we were just so clinical, linked up so well and played such nice football, so part of me suggests we should keep it that way. On the other hand, Atletico are a far stronger, quicker, more technically gifted side than Motherwell, and will be more prepared to deal with this kind of football, so part of me thinks we should play it tight and go 4-5-1, but this gives the problem of which striker to drop, considering Stokes and Hooper are both playing so well, link up so well and don't work as well together on their own. I'd be happy to see a 4-5-1 with Commons being brought back in, but I don't know who we should have up front. Given our poor away record, we should be focussing on getting 3 home wins, and I for one would be delighted to get a point in Spain.

I'd rather somebody else than Samaras, Vic Reeves. Would prefer Hooper or Bangura maybe.

Playing a 4-5-1 with Forrest and Commons on the wings isn't negative tactics imo. It's the only way to go, I admire the confidence people are showing by saying play 442 but I think that's a little naive. Samaras or Bangura need to start as a lone striker, Hooper offers absolutely nothing when playing alone and his pressuring is non existent, he rarely runs when we're not in possession. I would go for:

    ---------------Forster

    Wilson-----Wilson------Loovens------Mulgrew

    Forrest-----Brown---Kayal---Ki---Commons

    ---------------Samaras

This formation keeps things very tight, and means we have a goal threat from long range in Commons and Ki, because there's a good chance we're not going to get lots of action in their penalty area.

Exactly mate. We'll probably lose playing 4-4-2, but we'll definitely lose playing 4-5-1 imo. From what I can see, their defensive attributes do not match their attacking prowess. I think, Hooper and Stokes can score against them.

I critisize sammy as much as everyone and I wanted him gone but these are the types of games that he thrives in, He is also our only striker capable of playing up front by himself, and I would also rather have hooper and stokes rested for the huns game

that would be a great lineup, although Mark Wilson is injured I think so I would put Mulgrew at LB and wanyama at CB, I would also play bangura or Mccourt at LM since I think that commons is still in a slump

The more I think about it, the more I feel maybe we should just go with the team from the weekend. The best we can really hope for in this group is 9 points, 3 home wins. If we lose on Thursday but play the sort of football we did against Motherwell, I'll be happy. We might even nick it if we can subdue their attack, or even better, not allow them to attack. As Big Jock said, 'the best place to defend is in the other teams penalty box.'

I think this would be the perfect midfield for a 4-5-1. Problem is though: Commons is off form and would be risky playing him in such a big game.
Samaras has scored something like 7 goals in 12 months so we'd really be hoping for a counter attacking master class from Forrest or a long ranger from Ki. Limits our chances dramatically.

We might be able to replace Samaras with Bangura in future games, but far too early to tell with that 1.

I really feel like if we have any intention of scoring we're gonna have to go 4-4-2 and just ask our full backs to be more restrained than normal so as not to get caught open on the flanks.

Another quote from Lennon,'maj is suspended for thursday so we needed to look at another partnership today' Again implies he will be playing Mulgrew and Wilson at CB. Not sure what the El Kaddouri situation is but if he's not playing I wonder who'll be at LB. Surely wont be a 3-5-2....

Top scorer in Europa League history and 25+ goals for Porto last season.

Loovens will have him in his back pocket without a doubt :icon_mrgreen:
