If you can't get tickets for that then you should have plenty of other games to look out for. As 16 of the 30 teams in the top flight will be based in the greater Buenos Aires area. Tigre are way up North and Defensa in the south but most clubs (including the Cinco Grandes) are based pretty centrally.

Looking at the matches on that day San Lorenzo x Vélez Sarsfield and Racing Club x Lanús both stand out.

The conditions probably beat Morelia more than anything. The Strongest go into the group of Emelec (Ecuador), Internacional (Brazil) and Universidad de Chile. They'll do well to get any points on the road, but you can't count them out due their home form. Emelec should be OK playing in La Paz because of the games they have to play in places like the Quito area, Ambato and Cuenca in their league.

Probably the hardest group to predict but I'll go for Internacional and Emelec.

Cerro Porteño x Deportivo Táchira finishes 2 x 2. 3 goals in 6 minutes killed the tie for Cerro Porteño and completes the giant killing. First time a Venezuelan side has ever won a qualifying tie and first time since 2004 that there has been three Venezuelan sides in the groups stages. The qualifying rounds was introduce in 2005 to cut the group stage down to 32 teams from 36.

All down to this guy... Gelmin Rivas

Edit: The Recopa, which is the South American Super Cup has been delayed because of gang violence outside the stadium. Two people were killed today outside San Lorenzo's stadium earlier today and so the police have pushed the game back.

Palestino have made it to the groups, putting the Uruguayan giants Nacional out. Huge win for them and they go into a group with Zamora (Venezuela), Boca Juniors and Montevideo Wanderers. They should fancy their chances there but Boca and Wanderers will be hard games.

Nacional have won 150 games in the Libertadores, putting them second in the all time table. They have more points than anyone else, ever. This is the first time since 1996 that they have failed to reach the group stages.

This is only the fourth time Palestino have made it and the first time since 1979 they have done it. That shows you what they were up against. Great result :50:

Colo Colo for the Libertadores :icon_mrgreen:

Brilliant team to watch when they're on form. They were exceptional at times last season, always keep an eye out for their results and try to catch games when I can too, though I've only seen bits n bobs of their opening handful of games.

I might need you to keep me posted on when their games are in the Libertadores 31B404:icon_mrgreen:

Colo-Colo's biggest rivals Universidad de Chile start tonight at home to Emelec. A hard to game to start with but they should fancy themselves.

Colo Colo start tomorrow night at home to Atlético Mineiro which will be very tough for them.

So refs have taking the headlines so far. 2 Emelec players sent off but they held out and 5 players sent off in Wanderers x Zamora. Now The Strongest x Internacional, with a fat guy (Anderson) running at altitude. His first meaningful game for Inter. They'll do well to get anything in this game.

He ran, he suffered and was taking off half an hour in.

And the whole team suffered and lost.

Racing, first game in the Libertadores since 2003 and they made up for lost time. Gustavo Bou has started from where he left off last year.

Corinthians x São Paulo in the Libertadores! First ever Majestoso here. What a game to start off everything. Like a Milan derby in the groups of the Champions League.

I noticed that when I was looking at the groups last night. I assume there's never been country protection in the competition then? So, is this a kind of regular thing for two teams from the same country meeting in the groups in the Libertadores?

I know it'd be unlikely anyway due to the fact there is only a few teams that can qualify from a single country, but I'm just curious to see what other domestic rivals have faced each other in the groups before too.

No doubt you'll be able to let me know anyway :smiley-laughing002:

They used to do the groups by country. In 1966 the Libertadores became the first continental tournament in the world to feature the runners-up in each league. The draw wasn't made with each club, but instead each football association. Only in 2000 did it change to the current model.

They did it this way to keep travel costs down. Instead of jumping around the continent a club would "tour" another country, playing two away game there on the bounce.

That first time it had odd shaped groups, with the Argentine, Peruvian and Venezuelan teams in a group of six teams; Chilean and Paraguayan teams in the second group and Uruguay, Bolivia and Ecuador in the third. When Brazil and Colombia came back each group evened out until 1968 when they went for groups of two. Two from one country and two from another.

Because of the time spent with this model many derby matches have been played here. Peñarol and Nacional for example have played 38 times in the Libertadores. Cerro Porteño and Olimpia have gone at it 32 times and Boca Juniors have played River Plate 22 times. Derbies are less common in Brazil because 27 teams have made it to the Libertadores, with São Paulo and Rio normally get one in each. It took until 1974 for São Paulo to play Palmeiras in the Libertadores, a big rivalry.

Of course it made big rivalries too, maybe the biggest Flamengo x Atlético Mineiro. After both finishing on 8 points in their group the two sides held a play off in Goiás. The ref lost control of the game and gave the game to Flamengo about 40 minutes in as Atlético only had 6 players left. Fla went on to win it, the third Brazilian team to do so.

That Flamengo game is considered the biggest robbery from the history of Brazilian football, think of Bobby Madden refereeing the huns times 1000.

Nothing wrong with the referee staying in the same hotel as the Flamengo team the night before. Nothing I tell ya :fear:
