i think considering everything neil lennon went through last year, and yet still continues to want to be manager of our club, i think it's only naturally the vast majority of fans love him. but quite simply if he fails to deliver the league this year, and the automatic qualification to the champions league which comes with it, then he has to go in my opinion. considering the financial situation the huns are in, and coupled with the fact they are managed by a clown, there's no excuses this season.

Why? I didn't say that I only ever want Catholics to manage Celtic. I didn't say that because that's not how I feel.

What’s that supposed to mean exactly? :icon_confused:

    Catholic? Nationalist?

I don’t think that’s enough to strengthen anybody’s management of a football club.

Paul Lambert was a fantastic player for us. Celtic and Dortmund legend.

    Non-celtic fan

My point is when you’re a “Celtic legend” the support (or favouring) aspect sort of goes without saying.

Though if that was McStay’s point (in terms of support rather than politics or religion) then grand.

Why is that relevant? Why is being Catholic a desirable characteristic?

Given that the man who's idea it was to form the club was a Marist brother, and that one of the main reasons for the club's formation was to help feed a starving immigrant (mostly) Irish Catholic population, it just seems fitting to me when the club is managed by a man that is a Catholic. It feels 'right'.

That is not to say that I have any issue with a person of any other religious persuasion managing the club because I don't. Jock Stein is the greatest manager this club has ever had and he was a Protestant. Absolutely fine by me.

Many others will not agree with me on this, or they won't care one way or the other, and that is their right to do so. But that's the way I feel and I'm not at all ashamed of it.

Should all subsequent US presidents be Protestant because George Washington was? That’s the mentality of the Windsor’s.

We can respect Celtic’s Catholic origins without providing continuity to some pseudo sense of tradition.

You suggested having a Catholic manage Celtic “feels right” (given the origins of the club).

Using that logic we are to assume America feels uncomfortable with Barack Obama (given the origins of the presidency lies in white Protestantism).

    That is a supremacist viewpoint.

A manager should only “feel right” when he’s delivering upon the ambitions of the club.

What? We call ourselves a progressive club but this is the elephant in the room.

“It's not his creed nor his nationality which counts - it's the man himself.”

    Bottom line. :bbpd:

Erm.....no. And don't put words in my mouth to try and make me out to be a bigot or a supremacist either.

Your example about Barrack Obama holds absolutely no water at all because it is based on the premise that either:

    A - I feel uncomfortable when Celtic have a non-Catholic manager. Which I don't.

B - I am saying that other Celtic fans should/do feel uncomfortable when we have a non-Catholic manager. Which I'm not.

    You are twisting my words.

Obviously the most important factor in choosing a football manager is getting a guy who's going to win trophies. Nobody in their right mind is going to choose a * manager who is a fan of the club over a very good manager who isn't.

Winning trophies isn't the whole story though. Look at Gordon Strachan for example, he won trophies for Celtic but wasn't accepted by many Celtic fans. So that in itself says that winning isn't the only factor that makes fans warm towards a football manager.

If you can get a manager who will win you trophies but is also steeped in the club's origins, ethos and is himself a supporter of the club then that is the perfect scenario. Celtic fans love Neil Lennon because they feel that he is one of them. That feeling goes deeper, and encompasses more factors, than just the fact that he is a Celtic fan. I think you'd be naive to believe otherwise.

Judging by the way you're attempting to twist my words, that would make the Celtic support as a whole xenophobic I suppose.

Obviously you feel more comfortable with a Catholic manager otherwise you wouldn’t have made a point of referencing Catholicism at all.

Do you see Catholicism as having connotations with Celtic in today’s context?

Again we can respect Celtic’s origins in Catholicism without providing continuity except to matters attracting unanimity like charitable efforts.

Paul Lambert was not a Celtic fan....he may have affection towards us now but was not prior to playing for us.
