Pleased we have something set in stone.

The 2 week window until the group stages start is encouraging if they lodge appeals, etc. (Thats if it goes our way)

    This is 50/50 IMO.

It will be a * disgrace if they don't get kicked out, would make a mockery of UEFA and their rules, it's almost like Rooney getting banned for the swearing in the camera last season and playing in the next game, imagine the chaos that would cause? Man United would get docked points and hit with a massive fine would be back page headline of every paper for weeks, FC Sion played SEVERAL players who weren't allowed to play against us, even worse!

If the Disciplanary Body rule in favour of Sion then UEFA can challenge it. Its not as black and white as you may think.

    Hail, Hail!
    This is the STV report

Celtic will find out on Friday whether they will be reinstated to the 2011/12 Europa League, with UEFA due to rule on the eligibility of five Sion players to participate in the competition.
"The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body will meet on Friday 2 September at 17:00 CET to deal with the two protests lodged by Celtic FC," a statement from UEFA read. "The decision of the Control and Disciplinary Body will be communicated in the evening of the same day."
Pascal Feindouno, Gabri, Mario Mutsch, Jose Goncalves and Billy Ketkeophomphone were all included in the Swiss club’s squad for the play-off double header with the Glasgow club and all took to the field across the two legs.

As per a FIFA ruling, Sion are currently under a registration embargo and should not have included the players in their Europa League squad. That ruling though has been contested in the Swiss courts, with the Swiss FA subsequently allowing the registration of the quintet in domestic competition.

The matter is further complicated by a further case being heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with Sion challenging FIFA over the true duration of the embargo. No date has been announced by CAS on when they will rule on the matter, but a decision is expected to also be imminent.

UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body will determine whether they view the registrations of all five players to be valid.

    Possible sanctions
A UEFA source has made clear to STV that this case represents "uncharted territory" for the governing body and it may be the case that the punishment for Sion could vary, despite the wording in their rules.
UEFA’s disciplinary rules are clear on the fate of Sion if they are found to have fielded ineligible players. A range of sanctions are available, but according to the rulebook the mandatory punishment for such an event is for any applicable matches to be declared forfeit.

Article 14bis of the regulations states: “A match may be declared forfeit if a player who is ineligible under the regulations of the competition concerned participates in the match, as long as the opposing club files a protest.”

That rule is followed up by Article 14ter, which stipulates: “Any team sanctioned with a forfeit shall be deemed to have lost the match 3-0, unless the actual result is less favourable to the member association or club at fault, in which case it will stand.”

Celtic filed protests to UEFA after both legs of the tie with Sion. If those appeals are upheld, the club will progress 6-0 on aggregate to the group stages and will go into Group I with Atletico Madrid, Rennes and Udinese.

In addition to being made to forfeit both matches, Sion are also open to the full range of sanctions available under Article 14 of UEFA’s Disciplinary Regulations. 13 such punishments are available, including a warning, a fine between 100 Euro and 1,000,000 Euro, exclusion from future competitions and/or the withdrawal of a licence.

    Right of appeal

Sion have the right to appeal forfeit and are given three days following the notification of any decision to lodge their protest in writing. The grounds for their appeal must be submitted within six days. A fee of 1,000 Euro is payable.

UEFA also have the right to appeal any decision of its Control and Disciplinary Body, opening up the possibility for the governing body to challenge any decision to retain Sion in the Europa League.
    Backing for Celtic
Scottish Football Association president Campbell Ogilvie confirmed on Monday that Celtic had their support, saying sanctions should be taken against Sion if regulations have not been followed.
"Celtic made contact with the SFA, as any member club would do, and the SFA have been backing Celtic," he said. "The case is being heard this week and as a governing body we would always back one of our clubs in one of these cases.
"If there is a breach of rules then UEFA will certainly take whatever sanctions necessary, but the SFA would certainly back a member club in this case.
"The nature of football now, with regulations and legalities, means it is quite a complex issue. I haven't been involved in the detail of it but it is quite evident that there are a lot of legal issues being addressed, but these will be heard this week I believe.
"The decision is for UEFA but if someone has breached regulations and has been proved to have breached regulations then obviously a sanction should be taken, but that's obviously outwith our remit."

Who knows how well informed this UEFA source is, but I don't like the ambiguity being suggested. If they claim it's a unique case, they've got the wiggle room to conjure up any old ruling and punishment.
