Unemployment in the Imperial Valley, east of San Diego, is around 30%. I don't see any rioting there. Unemployment in Spain is 20% I think, and the only rioting you saw a few months ago was strictly aimed at the police. Even after it turned violent you didn't see any targeting of stores or anything like that. It's unfair to blame it on the social and economic situation when there are places that are worse off but aren't acting like a bunch of immature little *.

You're right Diegan, California doesn't have much of a history of rioting, eh?

That wasn't my point, don't be so easily offended and try to actually understand what I'm saying. I'll clarify it just for you:

Obviously California has a huge history of rioting... I'd feel the same way and say the same things even if my home of San Diego was doing the rioting. My point is that there are always places worse off, rioting isn't the answer, and if you're going to riot, have a point to it. In QA's link they're being lambasted by the Egyptians because they did it the right way. Basically these rioters have used this death as an excuse to run around town for a few days and get some cheap thrills. It's exactly the same as in LA where they used the corrupt Rodney King trial to cause mayhem even in communities which had nothing to do with it (like when they targeted the Asian communities). I call them immature little * too.

I'd have no problems with some people pulling what the Koreans in LA did. Basically just sit outside their shop with a shotgun and say bring it. It's these peoples' livelihood and if the true source of discontent is anger at unemployment then destroying the only businesses in town generating money is the absolute most * moronic thing they can do. Obviously the police should show restraint, but for the families having their life destroyed I would have no problem with defense by lethal force.

To be honest Diegan, I was just pulling your leg a little bit. It was meant to be a bit of a sarcastic jokey reply, but I just don't know how to do the appropriate emoticon smiley thing. Wasn't offended by what you said at all. Sorry mate.

The situation in the UK is rather different though. We have, I believe, the lowest social mobility of any country in the developed world - i.e. the correlation between a father's income and his son's income is the highest. If you are in the hole, chances are you will stay in the hole - and so will your kids, and their kids. It's not just that these teenagers don't have jobs, it's that there's no realistic prospect of them getting jobs, or getting anywhere, for the rest of their lives.

When people have no hope of improvement, they have nothing to lose. You are only ever one youth-centre-closure or one tv-transmitter-breakdown away from civil unrest.

They are certainly making their play.

I'm not going to post a link to their website, cos I'd only have to go thru & wash my hands, but they definitely see this as their big chance.

Haha, sorry then. :52: This subject gets me riled. With these numbers they have the power to really change things but all they're interested in is stealing PS3s. It's a shame and a waste of human space.

The US's is lower I believe. If not, it's the same level. When I looked at the student protests in the UK over prices, all I can say is that I'd kill to have tuition fees like you all have. You also have health care, which I will no longer have in about 9 months. If I suddenly get cancer in 9 months and 1 day, I'll either be charged hundreds of thousands of dollars or die.

Ive heard they drafted in police from Glasgow to London, is this the same for other cities??

If so does that not make them more open to riots?
