There seems to be a new age support for Celtic and alot of them seem to have a problem with our Irish connections.

If they do have a problem, they should support someone else.:50:

Exactly, these are the people that dont agree with our Irish songs being sung in Scotland at an Irish immigrant made club. If they want to sing british songs and boo our Irish ones there's a club along from Parkhead they can sit in and do it :56:

Maybe a bit harsh though Celtic welcomes everyone and everyone is entitled to an opinion

Are the streets appropriate places to have Orange Walks? For example ifI wanted to march against Muslims, Jews, Black people or any other race or religion. I would be told by the council and the government to get to *. But somehow its ok to march against Irish and catholics.

I don't see why anyone who hates are Irish roots and Irish history would want to support Celtic.

No, I am very pro EU and freedom of movement in Europe etc- I just find it hypocritical to be more committed to the country of your ancestors- (you're talking third and fourth generation) than the country you were born in.
I know a lot about Ireland, but if I asked the average Scottish celtic fan who sings these sectarian songs the following questions :
Politically, what is the governing political party in the ROI?
Who is the current Irish president?
Geographically, how many counties are in the ROI? And name them all?
I guarantee you that off the top of their head not very many would be able to tell me, without googling it.

I was born in Ireland and I speak fluent Irish. Stop being so ignorant. The ethnic Irish wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for Britain so deal with it.

I bet you wouldn't say these things to black people who celebrate their roots or asian people who celebrate their roots.

As I said, it's a deep rooted problem where education is needed. Will be incredibly tough to eradicate it.

I agree with this posters views.

When asked by the very people at the club, of whom I have the greatest possible respect for, it becomes evident that some of these songs make some people uncomfortable. Niel Lennon and Peter Lawell have come out and said they don't think Celtic Park is the place for political singing during sporting events. People didn't care in years gone by, but part of the answer is in those words, years gone by.

My best mate is a Rangers fan and he openly admits his fans are * terrible with some pretty deep rooted hatred. He made a brilliant point that Celtic and it's Irish roots represent a struggle against an occupation of another state. Rangers roots represent a hatred of Catholics. That's why they are more vicious in their reluctance to give up the old ways.

Supporting Rangers always seems like a serious affair from the outside. With the Hoops it's just a big party, having a laugh kind of support.

I, on a personal level, think it's kind of funny that we have risen above it and don't sing the proper offensive songs anymore because for most in the best part we know it's stupid at a football game. I'd like to see most of the Bobby Sands stuff etc. gone but keep the good ones that cause no fuss like The Fields.

Rangers are imploding. The board, management, team and fans. Lets move into the 21st century and watch them slip further into the dark ages.

I reckon the majority of the lot who don't want the songs sung at Parkhead are just embaressed because they don't know the words :56:

It's cool guys you can just hum along with the songs nobody will judge you! :icon_mrgreen:

Very true, it's genuinely depressing that some celtic fans son't seem to care about our heritage.

I think what your missing, by the people going against the songs, is the whole Celtic ethos of a club open to one and all, has meant there are millions of Celtic fans throughout Glasgow and the World who do not share that heritage.

When you say our heritage, you really mean your heritage that you share with some of the support.

Not every Celtic Fan is Catholic, of Irish decent and from Coatbridge you know:icon_mrgreen:

I don't think I am being ignorant. Listen, if you read my original post I said that we SHOULD celebrate our Irish heritage, but some Celtic fans go way Over the top.
My background is Irish -My great grandparents were Irish immigrant horse thieves who came here to escape the famine. I went to St Patrick's High School in Coatbridge. But, I just feel an element of the Celtic fans go over the score about this Irish thing. I am a practising Scottish catholic who is Celtic mad- I was born in Scotland and am a British citizen, regardless of my heritage or ancestors. , but know that the greatest figures in our clubs history have been Scottish protestants -Jock Stein, Kenny Dalglish, Tommy Gemmell, Gordon Strachan

A lot of our fans would rather play down our roots and become another Dundee United or Hibs. After all if I want to celebrate Ireland I should * off home.

Find me a post where someone has said they are ashamed of Celtic's origins and no saying we are a Scottish club dosent count as being ashamed.
