But, I would hate it, if people stopped singing them simply because a semi-academic or third rate journo said so.

I don't think the media has played a part in the majority of peoples opinions about these chants. It certainly hasn't for me.
Time has simply moved on and unfortunatly too many peoples lives have been effected by the modern IRA.

I still fail to see where this has a place in football.

So those of Irish descent in Scotland arent allowed there opinion on Irelands troubles?
Believe me the Celtic support are more politically aware than you obviously think!
Your in Dublin mate its not as if your slap bang in the middle of the north yourself!
Id say the average Celtic fan of an Irish Republican persuasion knows more about the conflict in the North than the average person in the free state. (& i dont mean you here)

The average Celtic fan gets a very one sided skewed view of the situation in Northern Ireland through a mix of one-sided traditions and the fact that it tends to be strong republicans from Ulster who are attracted to Celtic. That way people never will get a proper understanding. You need to understand both sides.

The average Celtic fan (Scottish or Irish) is far more republican than the average Irish person in my experience. How many Irish outside the 6 counties of N Ireland vote for a hardline republican party with a strong focus on the N Ireland situation. Not many. 10% maybe? Far too many Scottish Celtic fans adopt exagerratedly republican and bitter stances on Ireland IMO and its totally out of step with the vast majority of real Irish people. Someone called them 'west Brits' like these moderate Irish people are some sort of oddball pro-British majority but the truth is there are 9 of them for every hardline republican in Ireland.

The away supporters are probably the better support as they make an effort and pay extra to travel to away grounds to follow Celtic. Almost 100% of the away travellers sing these songs and the atmosphere is electric win or lose at away games. The songs, for example Broad Black Brimmer and Roll of Honour, almost the whole away crowd have joined in and bounce up and down like the Green Brigade are so often praised for at Parkhead. The away travellers in my opinion make more of an effort to back the team and seem to have the right idea about the club. So why is everyone saying "they are an embaressment to the club" for the choice of song they sing? I for one feel it would be more embarrassing if the whole away support were offended by these NON SECTARIAN chants and sat quiet the majority of the away games, except for perhaps standing and singing I Just Can't Get Enough, or Let's All Do The Huddle on rotation. It adds a bit of culture, and rebellion... Which makes it more than a football club with average fans... It makes it a family who tell tales and songs of troubled past and Irish history! And if your not Irish, which I am not, but I have Irish decendents. In all fairness you knew what you were getting into when you started supporting Celtic so don't come in and moan and try to change a club, and it's award winning and worldwide known support.

Sectarianism should be stamped out. History should be talked about and proudly

Yes the truth is that the majority in the free state sadly couldnt care less about the 6 counties, doesnt mean they are right.. or that the views of the Irish that are still living under British occupation are 'skewed'

Which is exactly why im saying that the average celtic supporting republican knows more (even if it is a bit one sided) than the average citizen of the 26 counties!
