Recently finished The Sea Wolf and The Iron Heel both by Jack London. Can see why so many giants throughout history listed these as truly life-changing reads.

Can't recommend either highly enough, honestly go buy them! Although if you haven't read a lot of political literature you might want to keep your Oxford handy for The Iron Heel :smiley-laughing002:

About to start The Last Word on Frank Sinatra by George Jacobs and William Stadiem. Not my usual but it was 25p and I couldn't resist Q magazines' note of "juicy tidbits about the Mob,Marilyn, the Kennedys and other cool stuff Robbie Williams can only dream of" :56:

Finished The Chimp Paradox, can't really comment on how good it is unless I actually notice any difference from reading it, although there is some simple and effective ideas in it.

About halfway through I heard you paint houses by Charles Brandt, unbelievable read, makes me even more excited for the film.

Reading Farnheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Premise is basically in future USA all books are illegal and firemen's (protagonist is a fireman) job is to go to any book owners house and pour kerosine on all books. Farnheit 451 is the temperature that paper burns.

It's really easy reading and direct story. Not brilliant, but could easily be read in a few hours if you're a fast reader.

Just finished reading Bram Stoker's Dracula. It was ok. I quite enjoyed the gothic, Victorian style in which it was written, and the story itself is great, but I was a bit disappointed in the ending. I mean I knew Dracula was eventually going to get killed but the way it came about was a bit of an anti-climax.

If someone asked me to recommend a good vampire story to them I think I would recommend Salem's Lot over this book.

    7/10.

Coming to the end of Dr. Sax just now, the Kerouac book. Typically Kerouac for all the right reasons, but hasn't grabbed me quite as much as some of his others, maybe I'm getting dulled to his style.

my favorite Kerouac book was Big Sur. Harrowing at times, especially as he's describing going thru the D.Ts. He was dead 4 or 5 years later.

Aye, Big Sur is very disturbing, he's lost almost all of his vigour by that point and the prose is no where near as energetic as his usual work, just as affecting in its own way though. If I had to pick a favourite it'd be Visions of Cody, though On the Road and Vanity of Duluoz both influenced me greatly.
