Was a really good big game player for a couple of seasons under MON but IMO tarnished the memories by staying around for the dosh when he was no longer wanted. Most players wouldnt do that and would take a cut rather than stay a couple of seasons in the reserves. Fans resented that cause it damaged out finances having expensive dead wood.

Remember the free kick against Liverpool in the UEFA Cup run? I'll always remember him for that. Thanks for the memories Thommo! :)

He's on about 25k a week and is hanging out for a large payoff is that not enough good wishes for you? cheerio to an average player made to look better than he was by a good team, and the reason he has hardly played is because he's finished, the problem with some people is they are stuck in the past and that is were thomson should remain if we ever manage to get rid of the money grabber. :shamrock: :shamrock: :shamrock:

I think you know * all about Thommo. Average? You ever seen him play. In his day he was THEE best left sided midfielder in the British Isles. He was a major cog in the MON wheel that guided us to our first European final since 1970. I love Thommo and wish him all the best wherever he goes.
And BTW I think Celtic treated him a bit harshly and should have paid him off last season.

I agree with you. In his prime under MO'N he was absolutely fantastic, with some really important goals and also had a handy knack of scoring crackers against the TFOD.

But, at the stage of his career he was at, I'd have thought a pro would want to play every week, not take inflated wages for doing * all. He's already a very wealthy man and I'm sure a decent championship team would have taken him and paid him good money last year.

Having said that, it was MO'N who rewarded him with a contract which was maybe longer than it should have been and he's quite within his rights to sit it out.

Great player for us and I hope he does well wherever he goes.

Celtic offered him that contract and he accepted it. He honours the contract he signed and that makes him a leech? Have you considered that there are family issues for him. Would you uproot your family so that you could appease the fans by not honouring the contract you signed with their club? Strachan has praised Thomson's attitude. Thomson has always said that he would play and give his all if selected (and I believe him). That's the side of the bargain he has to stick to, and he has.

He made a great contribution to Celtic for most of his time on the payroll. To rubbish him is out of order.

Bobo and Thompson were given a stupidly generous contract that has made them hang about after his day was done and the fans rightly resent those two pocketing the sort of money between them that would pay at least four good new players salaries. Bobo at least has had the excuse of injury and limited ability but Thompson hasnt been deserving of a place since he turned 30 and I think he has been cheating the fans by swinging the lead and making no effort. A player should not suddenly become crap at 30 for no reason. He even looks rubbish in the reserves. Was a good player but memories have been spoiled.

Well I dont. Why did he suddenly become useless as young as 30? Why does he not appear to even try in the reserves. I heard he was allegedly a heavy smoker and did not take care of himself as well as he should. If that is true he has cheated the club. He should have had at the very least another couple of top years in him at 30 but gives the appearance he is 37 or something.

i agree keltoi...some gd memories of great" big game" goals from thommo:50: ...though i feel his EGO also grew with his form..
personally i waz always in favour of petta over him in MONs team...added more pace and suited the wing back play more imo i.e most proud day of my celtic life v. ajax(away) petta and agathe tore them 2 pieces in the greatest away performance in europe from the bhoys ive ever seen:50:

being an ex villa fan ive always thought thommo waz overated...always capable of "great momments" with that left foot but very limited as a footballer in terms of movement/skill etc.

suited mons direct style of play:50: but talent wise he is nothing compared 2 riordan/maloney/mcgeady even petta:97: anyway thanks for the great momments thommo:celt_2:

He didn't become useless. He just didn't figure in WGS plans. I don't resent him for hanging around. He has to think of the future which at his age is not long in a playing sense. If Celtic had made him a decent offer I'm sure he would have rather gone somewhere where he can get 1st team football.
We were all please when he signed a new contract, but because he didn't play some people are saying he is wrong to still be at Celtic. If he had signed the contract and then wanted away it would be a different story. Look at Petrov, but I think Stan hasn't been pilloried as much as Thommo here. Thommo has been nothing but loyal to Celtic, but some people on here are not too quick to see that.

Difference is Petrov played well/ tried until he left (scored a couple of crackers in his last few games) and, most importantly, he did us a big favour not going on a Bosman and bringing in a huge transfer fee which funded JVOH, Grav and Naylor.

As for Thommo, I do not go for all this violins playing in the background supporting his family stuff. Its not the 1980s when top SPL players were not earning much more than a pretty well paid ordinary job and a short career. Thompson earned about 2.5 million for doing sweet FA since Strachan arrived and was a millionaire several times over already if he had any money sense. I am sorry but I find it hard to feel for Thommo's right to add a few more millions to his existing millions when many a the Tim would love to earn a year what he gets a week. Pride should be more important than money once you are already totally set up for life with several million in the bank (unless he is a serious bling head who wants gold taps on the bath etc). Top players wages are obsene now anyway. Most of them do not have the brains to make big money any other way so they should be greatful to make a million or two in a dream job over their career and should certainly not expect one or two million quid every year. That sort of money can turn players into fannys like Beckham and cripples clubs.

Anyway, its clear from this thread that he has soured his memory with a lot of Tims and thats his price for the extra money. I am sure he could have found a club to pay him two-thirds of his wages over the last two years so he has sold his memory and chucked away two years of his career for about 800,000 when he is already a multi millionaire. Are we supposed to admire that?
