Not arguing with you fella because you know a lot more about the subject than I do. I thought Celtic and its fans were very proud of its Irish heritage? That being the case is it such a big deal to hear them sing a famous Irish song? Be careful mate you will be heading into the Prawn Sandwhich Zone if your not very careful, and belive me its not a nice place.

Total agree!!!!! Unfortunately the PC brigade are in control, they like to think they are above all the tribal stuff - thats why the atmosphere at home is now dead except for old firm and european games

but The Fields of Athenry does??surely if the tricolour that flies above the stadium is ok,than its ok to sing the anthem is okay....I don't want to be seen as some kind of apologist for some of the Republican * that is heard at CP cos that is bang out of order,as is singing songs like BOTOB and that kinda thing we all know they are banned and there is no excuse for it and i'm not saying there is..
but equally there is no excuse to talk about spitting because you hear a song sung in English(that was originally wriiten in english)cos you don't like it, now that is intolerance you talk about offending others but that is what you come out with??
As for Dempsey banging his head off a brick wall,if he makes any valid points about this i will cheerfully give credit where it's due

The Fields of Athenry is a folk song. End of

Lemme say again, the irish dont sing the irish national anthem in english. To pass it off as the NA, is an insult to the irish. Sung in english, its no longer the irish national anthem, its just another rebel song.

Its a rebel song that was adopted to the national anthem in 1926 when we were given a freestate.

Now if you don't know Ireland's history, dont * bother trying to pull me up on things that you dont understand. Ignorance on the subject is * rife on this forum:47:

Thats a total generalisation, some generations of Irish were taught this song in english. Im irish and believe me I am not insulted when i hear the Soldiers Song sung at celtic matches, in fact hearing these type of songs is what drew me and thousands of others to the club in the first place many years ago!!!!!

You keep changing your argument - one minute you tell us no songs unrelated to football should be sung, the next its ok to sing Fields of Athenry not TSS. Maybe you should practise the tolerance that you preach!!!!

Taken from the follow follow board. Does any of this sound familiar :97:

There have been many far more worthy posters on here who have listed the failures of Murray to stand up for The Rangers. Needless to say this has allowed those in power in Scotland and in control of the media to run riot over us and our traditions.

From the first time that Murray refused to take on these anti-Rangers, anti-Protestant, anti-British, anti-Unionist bigots we were in trouble.

Due to media and "Sellick minded" pressure, UEFA ignorance of OUR traditions, and Murray's captitulation we now have a support that does not know what to sing. A support that is divided. Some think we can sing what we want, some look agahst even when the Sash or Derry's Walls is sung, some who will only sing the pathetic lamb like bleatings in the wee blue book, and yet others who will sing nothing.

Seems like some individuals from both sides of the divide are unhappy with the state of play :87:

Hang on a second there first of all nothing was" given" and second of all it was not 1926 it was 1922 when the establishment of the Free State occurred so the ignorance seems to be coming from your end not mine...
#And the argument was not whether The Fields is a folk song it's about it's connection to CFC so saying end of means * all..and i can categorically assure you that the singing of the National Anthem in english is not an insult and you can check that out with Department of Gaeltacht Affairs yourself

The National Anthem was changed from * Save Ireland, go read a history book.

Department of Gaeltacht Affairs?? They'd have to say that.

Ask an Irish person if they would rather the national anthem sung in english, and tell me the answers when you get discharged from hospital.

I'm not changing my arguement. I'm just sick of having to restate everything i've said everytime so im shorting my points

Dempsey, now I agree with a lot of the points you make regarding certain topics but that was the worst attempt ever at justifying what is sung at certain grounds. Poor. :38: Aberdeeen fans get pelters about singing about Ian Durrant's injury never mind singing about the death of sports fans and people.

Ask Irish Celtic Supporters how they feel when they hear TSS sung at Celtic games and vast majority are absolutely delighted, English or not!!!!!!!

Ahh that must have been your confusion Dempsey. Yeah, they are songs from one set of fans about tradegy's that have happened to an opposition club. For example, Leeds fans would regularly visit Old Trafford and sing about the Munich air disaster where Manchester United lost many players and club members via one air crash. No probs mate. :50: I thought you were justifying it because it was 'related' so to speak but I can see your confusion.

What???did i say what people would prefer.. you said it was an insult to sing it in english it is not an insult....
And if you were not so arrogant check your own post about 1926 did i mention the anthem i said the free state was not "given to us" in 1926 it was earned in 1922 so maybe phrase things a bit better
The deaprtment would have to say that would they???cos government departments are given to lying??Well i am irish and i work in one of those departments so don't tell me to read a history book you are uninformed as you are ignorant. The Department will give you the official line..unless you think you know better than the Irish Government
" GET OUT OF HOSPITAL" would ye cop yourself on you argue and debate like a spoilt child..
If ye bothered to read peoples posts you might have a better idea of what they said because i never mentioned * save Ireland check again

    * YOURSELF

Yes, Government Departments give the "official" line alright. They'd be the most PC about everything and anything.

Right, miscommunication about what you were refering to, my bad. But you took the arguement off on a tangent because of a clerical error.

Dempsey while I really admire your staying power on this one :50: this argument has gone on for longer than any of us can remember maybe it's better to concede the battle to win the war.........in other words to * with it and let it go there's always another day. Gives us all chance to collect our thoughts on this highly emotive issue :50:
