Right back Dino Skvorc is currently in Glasgow undergoing a week-long trial with Celtic. The Croatia Under-21 international, on the books of top flight club NK Varazdin in his homeland, will train with the first team this week as Neil Lennon runs the rule over a potential January signing.
The 20-year-old, who has risen through the youth ranks at international level and made his first start at Under-21 level in a November friendly with Slovenia, is a highly rated defender who has caught the eye with a succession of impressive performances this season.
NK Varazdin insist no agreement is in place to sell Skvorc to Celtic, with his trip to Scotland merely a trial at the request of the SPL side. Their coach, Samir Toplak, has stated it would take a sizeable offer to prise away the prospect, who made his first team debut at the age of 17 in 2007.
“We are in a delicate position simply because we do not have a replacement for him,” Varteks coach Samir Toplak told evarazdin.hr.
“Skvorc is extremely important to our team and if a club wants to buy him, they will need to spend seven figures in a foreign currency, preferably Euros. Otherwise, we will have nothing to talk about.”
Skvorc has been an ever-present for his club this season, with Varazdin occupying a mid-table position in the Croatian Prva HNL which sees them delicately poised between pushing for a European spot and fending off the threat of relegation from the 16-team division.
A physical, six foot plus player, Skvorc is described a faultless, strong tackling defender who is good in the air.
He scored in his team's last game before the lengthy Croatian winter shutdown, finding the net to equalise late on in a 1-1 draw away to league leaders NK Dinamo Zagreb. NK Varazdin's next league fixture is not until February 26,
It is reported in Croatia that Italian Serie A club Udinese and Russians Zenit St Petersburg have also been monitoring Skvorc's progress, having impressed throughout the 2010/11 campaign to date.

    He's a centre-back, not right-back.

He may be capable playing at centre-back, but he's been playing as a right-back for his club.

I've been saying that we should be going into the Croatian market for years. Some very talented players from that country leaves for cheap prices.

Do we need work permits for players in Croatia? I know that they play in the European Cups and Championship but are they part of the EU?

Agree massive talent in the croatian league, the only problem over the years is the croatian clubs tend to overprice there players and therefore price clubs out of a move for the players

Celtic have been told they must pay upwards of £850,000 if they want to follow up their interest in Croatia Under-21 defender Dino Skvorc.
Croatian side NK Varazdin have allowed the 20-year-old to train with Celtic for a week with a view to a permanent transfer.
However, reports in Croatia claim Zenit St Petersburg and Udinese are also tracking the player.
His club's manager, Samir Toplak, told Elektroni "We are in a delicate position because we do not have a replacement for him.
"Skvorc is extremely important to our team so any club that wants to buy him must pay seven figures. And in a foreign currency, preferably Euros. Otherwise we have nothing to talk about."

A defensive RB is not bad to have. Sometimes it's better to leave the attacking to the wide midfielders.
