I fail to recognise people like this as Celtic fans.... especially those who've no respect for the heritage and identity of this great club.

I think when games are considered important, there is a natural nervousness and energy that leads to a good atmosphere. You will know yourself, when you are excited before an important game you feel a buzz going in to the stadium. It doesnt have to be a huge game against a huge club. It just has to carry a certain level of significance and the nerves that comes with it.

Currently we play in a league with no challenge and little sense of importance going into each game. Whether we won, lost, or drew against Thistle meant very little in the context of the season, and we know this for almost certain. I think, even for guys like the Green Brigage, it is very hard to generate excitment in such an environment. Where there is real competition, fans bounce about because they get a rush knowing that every goal and every missed chance could mean something. The singing and the energy comes naturally. I really believe nowadays, our fans go to watch celtic because they enjoy doing so, but they do not carry the sense of excitment/fear/nervousness/panic/jubilation that it used to. I think that certainly impacts the atmosphere at grounds, no matter how hard any group of fans try to improve things.

I honestly think this has impacted the atmosphere more than any other factor.

    Definitely.

Think we are away to Ross County that weekend. Minute silence should be *cough* interesting, with everyone boozed up.

Do you know what Sween, the result or the opposition never used to matter to the Celtic support, we sang regardless because we were there to watch Celtic, nothing else. Even when we were finishing mid table we still supported the team because that's why we went.

The GB and the away support have carried on that tradition and you are being disingenuous by implying it's because of the product on the pitch.

People are being locked up for singing, it's because of that people are quieter, not because they are bored with the product.

I am not being disingenuous, it is just my opinion.

I dont think atmosphere is necessarily connected to success but I think it is connected to competition and a sense of anticipation and importance. When we were finishing mid table our games meant something. Back then losing 3 or 4 on the bounce could be the difference between Europe or missing out. Years later losing 3 on the bounce would mean losing the league. Now it means nothing.

Shakter Karagandy arent much bigger than Aberdeen the atmosphere was 100 times better because it meant 100 times as much. It was hugely significant if we won or lost that match, whereas games in the league no longer carry significance in themselves.

I am not that old to talk about tradition, and of course there are many variables as to why crowds have changed over the years. But only a few years back, every game in the SPL was important because the margin of error was so small. Every referee decision, every missed penalty, and every last minute goal, could shape the outcome of the season, and even the success or failure of a manager. The game against Partick Thistle at the weekend lacked that significance, and I think it is natural that fans dont get as excited about such games. A few years back, people would leave away grounds gutted because we dropped a couple of points. Now they leave with a mild grumble.

At Tannadice last season after we lost to a late goal there was even a couple of guys ahead of me who said "at least it keeps it interesting at the top of the league". A couple of seasons back and they would have been absolutely livid.

I dont really have an opinion as regards people not singing as they might get locked up (other than the law being daft), but surely there are enough songs for them to sing if they wanted to sing (any song about Celtic for example). I really think it has more to do with the lack of importance attached to SPL games nowadays as opposed to not being allowed to sing about an army.

So basically we stop singing Irish folk songs

We stop let the people sing, we stop the fields of Athenry, we stop this land is your land, we stop YNWA cos its a musical song and nothing to do with football, we stop the lonesome boatman and boolavogue.

We can sing Celtic symphony though as its a Celtic song, just not the chorus.

    Brilliant :87:

Lets scrap the entire song book and only sing football songs.

As of the roll of honor, if you sing it you risk arrest, no matter how ridiculous the situaition is thats the reality, either don't sing it or cover up your face.

Another thing, if there is any uncertainty over what chants are acceptable and what aren't surely the club need to come out and help the fans out a bit? tell us that roll of honor is offensive and the reasons why it shouldn't be sung, what songs are ok and what ones aren't.

The club play the FOA over the tannoy. "Against the famine and the crown, I rebelled..."

It could be argued that that could fall foul of Herr Salmond's anti-Celtic bill.

    It's pure hypocrisy.

He said we should only sing football songs or songs relating to football.

LTPS and the fields don't fall under that category neither does YNWA and the rest of the songs i mentioned. So if we done that half the song book would be scrapped and the atmosphere would decline.

He said no such thing. Go and actually read what has been written and follow the conversation.

Guy off our bus bought a Green Brigade T-shirt out of the Celtic club on the London Road a few games back.
