The problem is the green brigade take it upon themselves to speak on behalf of all celtic fans. I appreciate their dedication to the club, but there is a silent majority of celtic fans who just wanted to go to watch their team, and many of them to wear a poppy in respect of relatives who have died in previous wars. Many others couldnt give a toss about the poppy appeal but want to watch their team without having to think about Irish politics and vitriol towards their country.

It is all good and well having a right to an opinion, but people and a club should have the right to remember their war dead without others flying hateful banners. Do you think if I unfurled a massive banner next to them in support of the poppy appeal, would they quietly respect my right to rememberance? Nah, they wouldnt. This is what gets me about the green brigade. They want to promote the club as all inclusive and free to all, yet I can only imagine their reaction to someone flying anything they see as being against their narrow pro-republican viewpoint.

If you dont like Britain then fair enough. If you are British but dont want to be, fair enough. But it is just bad taste to disrespect the war dead of any country. If I were in Germany during a rememberance service for their war dead, I would respect their right to remember loved ones. This doesnt make what the German army have done in the past right. It doenst mean I am a blind sheep. It means I appreciate the right of people who lost loved ones to remember them for a day without me telling them all about my political opinions and spouting hate towards their nation.

I know this debate is an old one, but it really summarises my love/hate (or rather like/dislike) views towards the greed brigade.

so what are your feelings towards remembering people who have killed and maimed your family. granted you have the right to remember your dead but no man should be FORCED to honor there grandparents, parents and childrens murderers. as far as im concerned it wasent a war, more an illegal occupation in Ireland.

I wouldnt remember them. I would remember those who were part of my family. As I said, I dont understand the mentality of going into someone elses country (or your own) and booing or protesting against rememberance. I had family members who fought against the Germans, but I am not crass or ignorant enough to go to Germany and tell everyone how their relatives "shame the devils of *". Many people were conscipted and had no choice. Many people fought in the Irish independence movement then joined the British to fight in WW2 against the evil of facism. You arent forced to honor anyone. You are asked to show humility for one day for those wanting to honor people.

That day was an utter embarrassment to the club. The club asked fans to remember the war dead of our own club, and the green brigade refused to do so in the name of political point scoring.

The majority of our fans are either Irish or come from Irish stock. We represent Irish immigrants all over the world believe it or not. Iv met Irish immigrants and people who came from Irish families all over the world that have been brought up the Glasgow Celtic way :celt_2:

100% correct mate. My grans brother died a prisoner of War in Poland during WW2, he was just 18 and died of pneumonia. I don't have a problem commemorating WW1 & WW2 soldiers because they fought for freedom and were really only civilians. The soldiers of the wars since are killing machines with a blood *, I personally don't think a club like Celtic should be touching that kind of charity.

The Green Brigade do remember the fight against the Nazis and fascism I believe, but in my own view modern day folk have hijacked the poppys proper meaning. Rangers display of poppys (the card display) was a good example.

Probably the most over the top display I've ever seen, totally vomit inducing and cringeworthy.

They are using the image of the poppy as a weapon to try and make a pathetic attempt to get one over on wee Timmy taig.

I come from Irish stock. But I also believe most people in Ireland wouldnt think about going to another country and distrupting a rememberance, even if it were a country whom they fought against in the past. There is far more to Ireland and being Irish Im sure, than the pro-republican, pro-IRA, anti-British, "fightin-Irish" sterotype so many of the irish diaspora in Scotland seem to revel in.

The only reason they protested against it was because it was sewn onto the team shirt which should never have happened.

Everything they do is designed to basically get a rise out of us. It's like the ethos of their entire institution. They care about us far more than they care about their own team.

In typical Rangers fashion, we do one thing, they take the polar opposite stance. They are completely devoid of free thinking.

Felt they embarrassed the club with the poppy banner however in terms of atmosphere they're great and we need them at Celtic Park.

That is very much still alive today mo chara will always be the fighting Irish lol take no *. The only thing thats changed is people got money and are forgetting their history and culture, fighting is actually in our culture same as the travellers but they just stayed loyal to who they are. The travellers are really just old fashion Irish. You go to any working class estates or villages around the country and you will see how the Irish are not the west brit * people see around temple bar or read in the papers.

Graham Speirs tweeted that his column tomorrow will be about the GB and their recent statement as well as the embarassing (his word) singing about the IRA by both Celtic and Rangers fans. Should be interesting and of course, controversial.
