Don't want to have an association with those *. The number of times those scummy * have behaved poorly and for it to be laballed old firm fans disgusts me. Isn't that if Celtic fans do poorly (mainly cos our fans are well behaved more than anything)

good post and a fair comment. but the highlited part for me could be a cover up excuse for us not going there or getting there! i beleive the real reason we arent getting in is that the english know celtic and rangers are a threat! as we are both huge clubs and with great financial backing we would get there aswell! we could and probably will would win the epl someday! and to me they would not like that a scottish team winning the epl? think about it. thats my opinion.

Maybe I should have started a thread or specifically kept on the issue of Hammer's post which was about someone referring to the "old firm game" which brought out his response that it's a "derby game" and not the old firm...

That really is the point Im trying to make here because people chiming in with the "I don't want the guilty by association" label , are really just saying what we all believe anyway , that using "old firm" to implicate us in a problem caused solely by the huns is why the term became bastardised in the first place by those who now find it offensive regardless of how it is used..

where is the guilt by association in "old firm game"...

there isn't any there, but there is when you hear things like '200 old firm fans were arrested etc' when it was clearly just Huns if it was them that were playing

You're running off in a tangent, it really is just a simple question.

    Q. Do you use the term 'Old Firm'?

    A. Yes, No, Don't Care

Nothing to do with games of football against them, that was just a catalyst for the thread.

Im actually taking back to the origin of why the debate got started today.. Your post triggered it..

I suppose if a parent of Celtic fans said they take their young kids to all home games but not to the old firm home games because "old firm games" are nothing but a cauldron of hate and bile for 90 minutes... Would anyone feel wrongly accused of guilt by association.. ? Possibly that would be merited..

I only ever use "old firm" to talk about the match and Im thousands of other Celtic fans do the same... I just want someone to explain why we shouldn't...

which is why I keep saying people get offended when they are being blamed for things they haven't done.. That's only when used in that context.. "Old firm" is used plenty times innocently though..

I don't like the term because I think it helps with perpetuating the idea that we are "just as bad as one another"- I would like others to differentiate us more rather than treat us like a packaged deal with the huns.

That said, I am guilty of using it on occasion in the context of "old firm match", but I've been trying not to.

We do stand alone but in one of those rare occasions (4 times per year) when it's said to be "old firm day" people should be able to make the destinction between "lumping us in with them" or someone just talking about a football match..

This is closest to my view.

If I had a quid for every time I'd heard the Scottish press refer to "Old Firm" this or "Old Firm" that - when what they're actually talking about is something negative specific to Rangers or Rangers fans - I would be able to buy out a * newspaper and start to redress the balance.

I never use the term to refer to the clubs. If I'm referring to the game, I call it "the Rangers game" if the context is Celtic, or "the Celtic game" if the context is Rangers. Only if the context is unclear do I use "Old Firm game", and even then, I often prefer "the Glasgow derby".

jiko calm down:50:the distinction as you so rightly put it,
is the very reason i hate the term.because, its not just a football match.
we are associated to the whole rangers ethos by that very phrase. everything they stand for i abhorr so i dont use those two words:celt_2:

i could say the same to you to calm down it's only a phrase old firm, it's not like if you say it 3 times that the boogy man will come and get you....
