My objections to the building of the Mosque so close to ground zero is that it will be used by some Muslims as a form of triumphalism, where ever there has been an Islamic victory then they build a Mosque, often over taking other religions places of worship. Indeed the Mosque in Cordoba was built on top of the Catholic Church in the city.

I'm all for religious freedom however, it works both ways, Muslims also have to acknowledge other peoples rights to practice their religion, is it fair that they call for freedom to practice their religion while denying others that exact same freedom?

If the are building a new Mosque in NY then it should be in an area where it is needed, an area where there is a Muslim population that will use it, not in a business district where the majority of users will be commuters who will only use it on their lunch break or before/after work - what's the need for a 13 story building in that particular area?

If there is no demand for a Mosque from the Muslim population in the area then why chose that particular site unless it's to be used as symbol. Some Muslims will see it as a symbol as reconciliation, unfortunately others will see it as a symbol of triumph and after reading a few of the speeches from Imam Rauf I suspect that despite his calls for "peace" his inability to recognise terrorism for the evil it is makes him one of the ones to use it as a symbol of triumph.

Obviously I've never met him and can only go on what I've read about him but the fact that he failed to acknowledge Hamas as a terrorist organisation when asked directly and the fact he stated the US were accessories to 9/11 then I can only conclude that he's not quite as moderate as suggested.

Strange thing is, these people probably cheer on Muslims in sport in some point. In America alone you have Ali, Bernard Hopkins,Shaq O'Neal plus many NFL and NBA stars.

    this the KKK day trip?

not that i know much about this and can't be arsed reading all they statements but to me thats like saying we won't sign a hun because lafferty snapped hinkel in an OF game...ok on a much larger scale but you can't judge tarnish a full religion because of the actions of a small minority

Yep, a religion didn't attack New York, Al Qaeda did. You can't label 1.8 billion people because of that groups actions.

And you can't label al the Protestants for * Sunday. But if Paisley decided he would build a Presbytherian Church on the Bogside in 1973, you wouldn't like it too.

americans protesting at a 'mosque' being built where the towers went down...why are they so insecure and scared of a religion based on christianity?

i mean if these dickheads had any brains why aint they protesting about yankee foreign policy in the middle east or how their beloved land of the free goes around bombing countries back to stone age and demanding countries give up their territorial soverignty so amerika can have the natural resources and bleed countries dry for their own interests, not to mention setting up puppet states and dictators and calling it democracy.

no wonder amerika had a 9/11 coming..the innocent have to suffer because uncle sam can't keep his nose out of foreign affairs.

imo they have every right to build one but so close to ground zero shows a lack of respect this will bring pain to the families who lost loved ones.

It is in a business district, not a residential one surely the most appropriate place for a mosque would be in the areas of NY with a Muslim population that will benefit from it?

Unfortunately for some Muslims it is all about the location due to it's symbolism.

Yes of course there are Muslims who would work in the area and talking to someone who also worked there they said there are prayer rooms etc already in the vicinity.

A Muslim is called to prayer 5 times a day, many will carry a prayer mat so they can pray while at work, I only know 3 of the times they are called to prayer, dawn, midday, and sunset therefore at dawn and sunset anyway they are likely to be home and not at work which is why I think building the mosque in a resedential area with a Muslim population that will benefit from it is more appropriate.

I read an article about it recently asking exactly that, who would use it, I'm at work just now so can't link it but I'll post the article later.

Another issue I would have is who is funding it. It's $100million to build and is being funded by Islamic countries such as Saudi Arabia, a country that does not allow the practice of any religion other than Islam, bans items such as Crucifix's and bibles etc, follows the Wahhabi sect of Islam where even other Muslims (Shia's) are considered infidels and teaches that all infidels should be hated because of their religion in the name of Allah. If this is who is funding it, exactly how tolerant will the teachings be?

Not everyone who is against the mosque being built there is racist, some people have genuine concerns of the motives behind building a mosque in that particular site.
