Celtic have contacted Hapoel Tel-Aviv over the availability of Israeli striker Itay Shechter. Neil Lennon had shown an interest in signing the forward before the transfer window closes but has been told he is not for sale.

STV Sport understands that the Parkhead club showed “serious interest” in Shechter but that Hapoel’s board refused to discuss a possible transfer. The player had been asked about a potential move to Glasgow but has said that he is happy to remain with his current club.

The striker, who has six international caps, is one of the hottest properties in Israeli football and scored 22 times for Hapoel last season. Shechter has already found the net this season, scoring a crucial goal in his side’s 3-2 win away at Red Bull Salzburg.

The player is thought to have been a target for Birmingham City as well as Celtic but will not be allowed to leave his club until January at the earliest.

Hapoel finished as runners-up in the Israeli league last year and have progressed through three qualifying rounds to take a place in this year’s Champions League group stages. At yesterday’s draw in Monaco they were placed in a group with Lyon, Benfica and Schalke 04.

STV has learned that Hapoel’s board believe they have a squad capable of progressing to the knockout stages, or taking a consolation place in the Europa League at the very worst. As a result, they will not contemplate selling any of their players until January at the earliest.

Having received no encouragement in their pursuit of Shechter, Celtic may now step up their interest in Hibs striker Anthony Stokes. Discussions are thought to have begun over a possible transfer for the former Arsenal, Falkirk and Sunderland player.

After completing the sale of Marc-Antoine Fortune to West Bromwich Albion on Friday morning, the Parkhead club are likely to redouble their efforts to bring in a forward in the next few days.

Don't think you can compare the two mate, that's like saying (in financial terms) that you went to buy an Audi but there were none in stock so you went to Ferrari instead :icon_mrgreen:

I'm excited by the prospect of this player but what can we offer him? He has Champions League football where he is, he'll win trophies where he is. I just don't see why he'd move to us right now.

If you actually watched Kayal against Utrecht, he was easily our best player again, the whole team was nowhere near good enough but that is ridiculously harsh, he'll still be a star for us
