the CELTIC cup

  1. not want to tread on the idea or something but if it was that simple an idea to make money i think every club would be trying to do one, there must be more too it than just turn up and get money, plus all these teams (especially the big ones) would get a major cut off it and DC United arent going to travel to Glasgow half way through their season.

Hey markobhoy ever considered a job in marketing?:84: Obviously there would be a few things to be ironed out but in general youve got yourself a really good idea there:50:

  2. hey guys, thanks for all the comments both positive and negative...keep them coming in if you've got any suggestions.

as for a points people have raised

i doubt a few games on the pitch would really ruin the pitch to be honest...ajax are able to do it with no bother

with possible crowd trouble, this could be easily solved through the selection of teams...no leeds/chelsea for example....and personally i doubt that kashima antlers are gonna bring any troublemakers!!! :)

someone mentioned about MLS teams not being available, which is a good point. i was thinking of an US select team of european players to play, but then their own clubs would not let them join up during the pre-season...i'll have a think...possibly, you would have to exclude the US teams and go for a chinese club...bigger market anyway

and to the guy who was sceptical about it being profitable. i'm no expert, but ajax seem to do well out of it. clubs need pre-season games so they are willing to go. good games which are slightly more competitive than usual...as you are playing for a cup, attracts much more fans. as you are selling the event of 6 games or so (even the ones not including us!!!) it provides celtic with much more tv money than is just gained from one fixture...also these can be sold to every tv market across europe and the far east. then you can add advertising/promotion at the event etc. it would be difficult to specify an exact figure, but personally i think the money gaimed would be fairly substantial, when you take into account that we're being paid £250,000 for each game in japan/USA

anyway, guys, keep the comments/criticisms/queries/suggestions coming, because i'm gonna write a blog about it, probably after the weekend, which will be on newsnow...cheers guys

  3. Ajax are known for having a terrible pitch. Mainly because it gets little sunlight, and is played on by two teams (Ajax and their gridiron team), but I doubt the preseason cup helps much.

Don't get me wrong, though. I think it's a great idea.

  4. The Ajax pitch probably digs up more because the Amsterdam Arena as far more closed in than Celtic Park. Celtic Park is a fairly open arena thanks to the main stand which can help the pitch quality a lot.

  5. Make it a bi-annual: one year a tour, the next the Celtic Cup.

  6. ws reading through the old posts there, this sounds like a really good idea to me! would it be possible?

  7. If Celtic was smart they would do something to try and get more fans in America. Much of the younger generations in America root for the big teams like Manure, Chelsea and Arsenal. These are the teams on the television over here. They should try and set up a T.V. with a station in America to provide us with all the Celtic games. Setanta shows rerun games on Wednesday night at like 8 and it is only one SPL game so it might not even be Celtic.

  8. If you have directv you can get setanta sports USA for an extra $12 a month. Unfortunately setanta sports USA is not on Dish or cable yet but your good to go if you have directv.

  9. Remember the Ibrox Cup? Rangers used to host a tournament every pre season. Not sure of it success, but the discontinued it, so who knows. Could be a great idea.

Or say, 6 set teams per season (Celtic included), and each year they play at a different stadium, one year Glasgow, then Manchester, Milan, DC and so on...? No? Shut up barry? :50:

  10. ah man if they dont go to the states this year im going to be depressed

big fan base and should be making it bigger

  11. Agreed, and I'm not sure why DC is the team to choose. NY/NJ is only 15 miles outside of the biggest city in the world and would draw alot more fans.

  12. I bought it but they only show Celtic sparringly on wednesday nights. It * sucks.

  13. AC.Milan just done a great training session in Malta and Liverpool, Man U & Juventus have all played friendlies out here. Why don't Celtic come in pre-season and we could have a Malta Cup. Not as much money as the Celtic Cup , but I'd appreciate it.:84:

  14. seems a good idea, would need to market it right so that it doesnt end up a poor mans Amsterdam. If we were to do it we'd have to do it right, at least 2 TOP euro teams, i.e. barca/inter etc, japanese team, american team etc.

That would bring in unbeleivable revenue imo, you know how the japanese and americans get - theyd get knocking each other out the way to seal a tv deal to watch theire best compete against the best in the world defo.

Although at the same time WGS would be probably forced to field a good team so as were not humiliated, and for the sake of those foriegn tv investors so injuries could occur.

  15. It's a great idea, but i think they main reason Celtic go on tours is to raise their profile, and also get loads ££££££. Unfortunately, this could drain the players a bit.

    Brill idea though.

  16. Good idea. Great for football in the Summer, and for new signings to show what they're made of.

Lyon, Everton, and LA Galaxy would be a good mixed selection.

  17. toronto just built a new stadium, it would be great to see the bhoys without having to drive far or fly

  18. judging by the responses this idea would be very popular. but the money involved in securing top sides to play might not make it financially viable.... but who knows the number crunchers should defo look into it ans see if it could be done... as said previously ajax do it... lets contact them and ask for advice on how they do it.
i like the idea of playing all pre seasons at home... and at the time of year pitch woodnae be harmed too much.
though i suspect the players enjoy getting away from the wags for a week or two.

  19. Top of the class for you markobhoy.
