If you dont know why some of our support identify to Ireland, then its rollyeyes time for you

But i agree, those who want to fly a saltire should do,just bring one along to the games and maybe more people will copy you.
No point complaining here about it.

That is why the symbolism of the flag is almost comic-tragic given that Ireland has been the most religious strife torn country in western Europe in the period of the flags existence. The Wolfe Tone period of the United Irishmen was the exception not the rule. In most other periods politics in Ireland largely fell into religious division. You can point to exceptions but that is the reality. Even now its like that in Northern Ireland where 90% of unionsits and protestants and 90% of nationalists/republicans are catholics. That is not going to happend by chance is it? It still divides on old fashioned religious blocks. So, in that respect the tricolour is a constant reminder of failure. Besides the old flag was more pretty and I am a shallow barsteward:icon_mrgreen:

who really cares if you bring a tricolour or satire to the match as long as you go and support the hoops. as a irish person i have no problem with either as my own allegiance
is to celtic and not to a scottish or irish flag.
just stop this silly debate and put ur energy into supporting the hoops on sunday and beyond

Got to say though, I think people who reject their own country or its football team because of some sectarian element or bad experience or how some blazers in the SFA operate are weak IMO. That is called being spineless and handing the keys over to the bigots. There is a small hardline element who see Scotland's history as one of a mental uber-protestant state but the reality is we are a very ancient nation and the majority were only like that for a small percentage of our history. In fact our history as a state goes something like 850AD to 1603AD. Thats over 750 years. Of all that time, we were actually a catholic nation except for the last 50 years and even then it was far from clearcut. All our national hero's were catholics-Bruce, Wallace, Bonnie Prince Charlie etc. Our declaration of independence was a very catholic document addressed to the pope. etc etc. We share the same Gaelic background in language, music etc as the Irish. The countries history is not of a super-protestant state that an element of Scots would want it to be. To turn our back on Scottishness and run towards an Irish ancestral identity because siome people try to make it a certain way is criminal IMO. By all means have pride in Irish ancestry but you have to embrace the culture and history of your own country.

Ahh come on seriously get a grip..Scotland is our home nation and you should be supporting it and if you choose to adopt RIO over Scotland then that's just plain stupid. Many players get stick for choosing to play for diffrent nations (McGeady,McCarthy, etc), I believe these fake fans should get the same stick.

There is nothing against supporting another nation but your birth nation should be your first.

Not matter what the colour of the flag it should be waved and a symbol of pride.

When Montgomery came on the scene or Hendry was winning followed by Higgins. I brag about our inventors such as Watt, Bell, Fleming, Baird and Kelvin to name a few. My patriotic side is obvious.

I celebrated McCoist goal against Grease to qualify for the Euro’s just like every other scot did.
I am against defacing the flag to be green and white and a can't understand why people think we don't fly the Saltire as a flag because it is the colour of rangers, the last I looked there was clearly no red in the Saltire.

I have never taking a saltire to a Celtic match and never will, just like I would never wear my Celtic strip to a Scotland match.

To add to that I know a few people in Ireland who can’t understand why some Irish fans wear Celtic strips to Ireland games because as much as they are the colours, they are not an Irish Team.

Celtic were formed by Irish people,to help Irish people, forced to leave their land due to famine, not alway's accepted by the native scots, Celtic Park became a place were they could "sing their stories and their song's"without fear, just look at the location's of some of the member's Celtic are supported throught out the world ,just not scotland, listen to some of the song's that come out of the Rangers end and you will know why some people do not want to fly the Saltire

I wonder if its because ROI have been slightly more successful than us in recent years, that all these people have jumped ship? Do you think if we were qualifying for tournaments every two years they would still support ROI? No chance. Its the type of fan celtic attract. Take note of the names that are saying that they never support Scotland. It will be interesting to see if they are humming the same tune if we are in the draw for 2012, particularly if the Irish aint.

The only time we qualified for successive tournaments was 88 and 90 in fact the last tournament we were in was in 2002. The Scots were at France 98 and we wernt. Euro 88 was the first one we qualified for so i dont know if we are more successful than Scotland, maybe in the last decade or so but not overall.

Anyway if i ever settled abroad and had kids they would be Irish and they would support Ireland over any country which they were raised. No doubt about that. I know people who have lived in Scotland and England their whole lives who call themselves Irish and to me they are no less Irish than myself.

I am not particularly patriotic because I don't believe any country is neccessarily better becuase I or you or anyone else was born there. There are holes in that logic, and it doesn't sit right with me. It is every individuals right to choose whether or not to support the national team. We all have the freedom to choose one way or the other. I was born in scotland, lived abroad for five years, but most of my life I have lived in Scotland. Its a beautiful country with a lot going for it and I do love things about it, but there's a lot of * as well. The SFA are a bunch of * crooks who will do ANYTHING THEY THINK THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH to * with celtic. So I don't support the scottish national football team. I used to get annoyed at international windows because it meant Celtic weren't playing, I just didn't care. I support other scottish teams though, ie the rugby or watching Andy Murray. But I feel I can pick and choose, and anyone who thinks they can tell me what to do or wants to call me and "*", (gunt, i thought better of you) or "give me stick" can go and take a running jump as far as I am concerned. I don't support ireland by the way, not really bothered about them unless McGeady is playing, then I like to see how he gets on against non SPL players.

A lot of you seem to think that you're taking a morale highground here, but you're basically just trying to bully everyone into thinking just like yourself.

    sad times
