Fox is a much more consistent defender and in my mind a better attacking option..Mowbray even moved him up to midfield in the crap minutes at the end of the Arsenal second leg. But I'm waiting for Danny's freekick abilities to start showing..if he starts whipping in good balls he could become one of our key players..something Naylor never was or could be.

How come Tony Mowbray managed to find us a LB after only a few weeks in the job then?

Was Strachan actually interested in Belhadj?? I never heard about that. Shame we couldn't have got him, he's looked really good the times I've seen him play.

Naylor had a fantastic first season , but fox is a better player in all aspects of the game

I think Naylor at his best and Fox are similar, Fox maybe shading it because he is stronger and a bit neater in the pass. I think though Naylor was pretty good in the 2nd half of last season. I am just delighted to have them both.

I think we should judge fox down the line because in his first few months Naylor seemed amazing.

I think we should just celebrate the fact that we have two good genuine left backs for the first time in absolute ages. First time this century, probably.

To be honest I can't particularly justify any of the rumours I posted - simply paper talk but I'm assuming there was a bit of fire to go along with the smoke..

As for the first bit - people are so eager to find absolutes in a game where there's so many opinions and gray areas. I wonder if Fox was available during Strachans reign, and let's face it - it's not as if Strachan would have missed one of the best players in the Championship considering we've bought a good couple of players from the English Football League in the past. It's all guess-work and here we have Mowbray getting full credit and I'd be the first to give it. In fact I'm delighted with Fox so far.

But this common opinion that Strachan *ignored* the left-back problem is just rubbish to me.

Or perhaps he was available all the time and Strachan just didn't think he was good enough for Celtic? It's too much of a coincidence for me that we were screaming out for a new left back for well over a year and then within 2 or 3 weeks Tony Mowbray delivers us one. Just my opinion.

We seem to have tried and failed to get 3 or 4 really decent LBs. Word is Ratz was coming until plug was pulled when Rangers went out the CL. Of course, the LB problems goes back decades. Although Jackie did OK he was not a natural LB and was useless as an attacker when played on the left. Wilson could do a similar job to Jackie but with more attacking pace. The last natural LB of any ability before Naylor was Mahe but he couldnt defend against real quality like Laudrop. Tosh had the same problem. Actually I cant think of us having a really good natural LB ever!

Aye but as gunt has highlighted our left-back problems have extended way beyond Strachan. To me circumstance has shed him a bad light. People might think I'm being over defensive but again as I say, I'm all for giving Mowbray great credit for what looks like a great left-back (so far anyway), but to lump all the blame of 10+ years on Strachan who actually done his utmost to sign a top quality fella, all while he basically inherited zero left-backs. It's strange to me.

Only a fool would blame Strachan for the lack of a good left back before he arrived at the club. I'm certainly not doing that. However, the left back position was a problem when Strachan arrived and when he left 4 years later it was still a problem. So I think he has to take some responsibility for that.

It's just a shame Lee Naylor couldn't maintain the form he showed in his first season at Celtic. I thought he was tremendous that year, arguably our best player in fact.

Of course I was disappointed that Strachan couldn't solve that area, like 3 or 4 managers before him. But there is a common notion I've noticed on here that Strachan, and I've seen this quoted a few times "ignored" the left-back problem. Tripe!

I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have 'ignored' it. I just wish he would have fixed it! :50:

And in all fairness mate for a season he did:50: Dont know what happened to Naylor after that but i think so faar Fox has been unreal. He is so composed on the ball and knows what he will do before he gets it and when he does his distribution is excellent, also i think he has been solid aswell on the defensive side of things.

Fox is better at everything than Naylor, faster, defending, attacking, passing, crossing, vision, linking up wit the midfield, shooting, set peices. Fox is a good player. Naylor was rubbish :50:

Naylors 1st season is a bit of a myth tbh. He continually give the ball away under no pressure and looks like a nervous wreck, anyone who goes to the games knows he's not good enough
