The difference between McGeady's dive and Eduardo's dive is that if Eduardo hadn't dived he could have still stayed on his feet as Boruc would not have touched him whereas if McGeady hadn't dived the Hibs player would have taken him out. I don't have a problem with players diving to avoid a challenge that could injure them. McGeady would have got taken out, Eduardo wouldn't have, that's the difference.

& as for Killens "dive". He jumped to avoid the player slideing in at him and he got straight back up again and wasn't even looking for a free kick.

Is this what it's going to be like now, every time a player goes down we have to discuss if it's a dive or a freekick?

I think McGeady anticipated a challenge coming in and 99/100 he'd have been correct in his judgement. As the challenge didn't come in it left the ref with no other choice and ultimately the correct choice.

McGeady has been riding challenges like that all his career and had done so several times in the same game.

You cannot compare him to Eduardo, he flat out cheated and what made it worse was he tried to get Boruc sent off AFTER he scored. McGeady had nothing to gain from that dive as he'd have been in a great position.

Did the ref get it right? Yes
    Did McGeady cheat? No

A dive is a dive. There was no contact on McGeady at all.

Whatever the 'magnitude of a dive' happens to be, it is still a dive and deserves to be punished. After all, are we judging by principle or by semantics?

The celtic fans demanded better scrutiny of diving after Eduardo's one, and that's what they have got. They can't have one rule for one and one for the other.

Here's what Mowbray said on it:

"Look at the build-up to the incident and the fact is Aiden is skipping past tackles and riding them, which players like him must do or they will never be able to playfootball.
"The bottom line is the boy went to ground probably because he was knackered. He had just run 50 yards, had skipped over two tackles already and saw a third one coming in.
"It happened right in front of me and the referee must have a bit of game knowledge there, it was a very poor decision - even the linesman was signalling for a free-kick to us.
"Was it diving? Never in a million years. Diving is when you are trying to influence a referee and throwing your arms upin the air. The halfway line is also not a place to simulate a dive or seek to gain an advantage.
"If we hadn't just come through the week we just have, with the Eduardo situation being blown up into a debate nationally, there wouldn't have been a red card.
"I'm not criticising the official, who has a very tough job in a hot atmosphere. But he has probably been sucked into making a decision he wouldn't have given 99 times out of 100 in any other week.
"But now we've suffered twice - the penalty at Arsenal and now Aiden's dismissal. We were all in a state of disbelief after the game .
"My professional opinion is that no way should it have been a red card. You must look at the context of the game and the footballer we're dealing with. We're going to end up with literally no players on the pitch if you get to this ridiculous situation.
"If yellowand red cards are being shown everywhere on the pitch, including the halfway line, we'll never have any players left."

    Well said Tony!!!!! :50:

He dived, thats the bottom line, he has to take his punishment like a man and accept it.
It's got * all to do with the statement in bold.

He was punished, he received a yellow card for it. Let's not try and paint Celtic as hyprocrites here, Mowbray has stated he really doesn't care about the Eduardo incident - it has been led firstly by the SFA and secondly by the tabloid media.

Diving is a disease in football. IMO, even worse than the diving is the playing hurt that goes on after fouls. It's disgusting.

I think that leagues should be doing everything they can to irradicate this and make it a mans game like it's supposed to be.

Having said that, I don't think this was a foul and I don't think it was a dive. If you watch the close up replay on Youtube, McGeady appears to step on the Hibs players foot with his left foot right before he goes down

watch this at about 28 seconds.

i think fans with a bit of experience behind them can accept that aiden did go down on his own. regardless if he was anticipating a dig or not...none arrived.
i do agree that it was a booking.
i dont agree that it merited a sending off.
purely for the area of the pitch were it happened.
problem was that having already taken a booking the referee had no choice.
for me it was bad refereeing
but it was also cheating from aiden to get a foul that wasnt one.
BUT....if we have to take our lumps on this one then fine....because if this is a new strictness being put into motion by the refs then ultimately we will benefit from the cheating * from govan who so often get those last minute penalties with a dive.
so look to the long run and i believe we will be better off with this new strictness.
    hail hail

I'm totally mystified at the attitude of some folk on here.

Here are some facts that I think bear repeating:

    1) The linesman on the touchline where the incident took place - who was right beside it - signalled a free kick in favour of McGeady.
    2) The Hibs player went over too.
    3) The Hibs player did not claim for anything.
    4) The whole thing only became an issue when the referee - who was nowhere near the incident, and had his view of it blocked by the Hibs player - rushed over to overrule the better-placed linesman and send McGeady off.
    5) Tony Mowbray - who was also at the side of the touchline and well-placed to see the incident - was very angry at the decision.

I don't think it was a dive, I think there was contact. Otherwise, why did the Hibs player fall over? Otherwise, why did the linesman on the spot signal a free-kick to Celtic?

I really can't imagine why so many Celtic fans have picked up on the media frenzy surrounding it, and taken the side of the media.

My first thoughts were,he's went down easlily looking for a foul, i've seen it again and there is no contact. I think mcgeadys reaction, or lack of says it all really. A second yellow is harsh though. Good to see boruc back to his best again. Man of the match for me.

I personally think he dived, nothing to do with you, the media, the referee or anyone else. It is my opinion and just because it differs from yours, doesn't make it wrong.

No, course not, and I didn't mean to suggest that anyone else's judgement was "wrong". Quite the opposite - the video evidence is not at all clear one way or the other.

My point is about the general attitude. So often I find myself having to smile at the way Celtic fans take the side of the Celtic player, even when the incident is clearly cut-&-dried the other way. The fact that so many folk on this thread have taken such an anti-McGeady line - despite the fact that this particular incident is not at all clear cut, and the video evidence doesn't show whether contact takes place or not - makes me conclude that the media aspect has coloured the general judgement a lot.

There is a very fine (and blurred) line between diving and going down easily, this needs to be sorted before we can accuse and punish divers.

McGeady doesn't strike me as a "diver", however, he has made a huge mistake yesterday and he couldn't have picked a worse time to do it.

This diving culture has to be eradicated and UEFA have now made a rod for their own back, with the Eudardo situation. Now referees have to act and tbf, McGeady didn't protest too much, he just seemed to accept the decision, that doesn't seem like the actions of a player, who feels he has been wronged.

I accept that people will always defend their players,in any circumstances but I was embarassed after that incident and feel that he has brought a slur on the club.

If you stop the small you tube clip on page 9 at 8 secs it defo looks as though Hanlons foot and McGeady's come together. Hanlon then pulls his leg and body back ! As TM said he had already rode one or two tackles, why not go over then ?

nah looking at the you tube clip from behind it does look like he stepped on his toes
but if you look at the highlights on the bbc player its obvious there was no contact.
