RANGERS and Celtic are on the hunt for a new shirt sponsor after Carling called time on the association which has run for six years.

But the warning from commercial experts is that, due to the current economic situation, they might struggle to attract bids worth more than £1million per year.

That's less than HALF the £2.2m in total they currently receive from Carling, and would be another severe blow to the income of the clubs who are reeling after yesterday's cut-price TV deal saw them battered again financially.

There are now genuine fears inside both Old Firm clubs they could lose up to £5m each over the length of a four-year contract, based on previous monies offered for shirt sponsor deals.

The Carling deal, which began in 2003 and which was renewed in 2005, has now entered its final year.

Talks about its renewal have already taken place over the past few months between the clubs and the brewer, but sources have told SportTimes Carling have opted against going on.

    one thing after another now.

I thought last season was the last season we were going to be sponsored by Carling anyway. Just hope we can find someone else now.

I hope we look in to getting our own sponsorship deal and not a combined OF one again, I know most companies in Scotland would prefer to do both or neither but I believe we are a much more sellable team and would be able to get a deal on our own merits, especially if can get an international company/brand to sponsor us.

Think the Evening times are going way over the top there.

Makes a great story and sells papers lol.

Am sure Peter Lawwell will once again get the best deal possible for celtic.

Agree Danni, hope we go alone also.

If this is the last year with Carling, it means the bumblebee top (which is goign to be the away top from 09-11) will be changed nest summer for a new sponsor!! i.e. another £40:31:

I heard a rumour that we have an independant deal already set up and waiting in the wings.
So it's probably just the papers sensationalising again.

Now surely the press in Scotland would never do such a thing as to sensationalise a story

Hope you are right Rodario and a deal is already in the pipe line :50:

Does anyone else think Celtic should follow Barcelona's lead and should sponsor Unicef, instead of taking money we give money to them, after all wasn't Celtic founded on helping people and charities?

i think celtic would do that! but compared to spain! scotland doesnt get the same kind of money that the spanish teams get and i think barca dont bother about shirt sponsors as a result? besides they have only being doing this for 2 years now with unicef and the give the charity money!

Rodario? Is that a brazillian * star?
Or has Danni got a cold?

Seriously though, the deal that's supposed to have been set-up is with a blue-chip household name company. Apparently they were keen to be associated with us partly because of Celtic fans reputation abroad and the Fair Play award.
It's supposedly our best ever shirt sponsor deal, even though you would expect any new deal to be better than the previous one, if it's true its good going in these times.
I don't think the final contract has been signed, it's a provisional agreement at the moment.

So the Evening Times have us "reeling" after the TV deal ?

More like the writer of the article wiz reelin'.

Domestic TV revenue in the SPL is fock all at the best of times - even if it disappeared completely, the club hit least by it would be Celtic.

I think we should definitely go it alone for the shirt sponsorship. Once we're out the equation, I think the other mob would find it difficult to get a decent deal, with their international reputation for bigotry, racism, thuggery and bad haircuts.

Rangers allegedly pulled out of a shirt sponsorship deal with a leading dog food manufacturer.

The reason they gave was they didn't think having Winalot on a Rangers shirt was appropriate.

Hope we go it alone - we're a far far bigger pull that those bawbags. We don't want to be associated with a club with such a predominantly racist, sectarian, dirty, horrible, orange fanbase.

    We'll have no problem.
