    CELTIC’S AUSTRALIA STORY

WHEN DID CELTIC FIRST TRAVEL TO AUSTRALIA?
Celtic’s first and only trip to the land down under came in 1977 when Jock Stein took his men to Australia to compete in the World of Soccer Cup. It took the form of two separate tournaments, with one held in Singapore and the other in Melbourne and Sydney, Celtic were joined at the competition by Arsenal – who featured future Celtic manager Liam Brady – Red Star Belgrade and a select team from the host nation. In Melbourne, Celtic drew 1-1 with Red Star, before recording successive 3-2 wins over Arsenal and the Australian Select to round off the group stage. The final took place in Melbourne and Celtic beat Red Star 2-0 with goals from Roddy MacDonald and Johannes Edvaldsson. Captain Danny McGrain lifted the trophy, which turned out to be Jock Stein’s last as the Celtic manager.

    HAVE THE CELTS VISITED OFTEN?
As stated above, that World of Soccer Tournament was the one and only time Celtic have visited Australia prior to this trip, although players past and present have regularly made the long trip for supporters’ functions. One man who went over and decided to stay was Lisbon Lion Willie Wallace. Originally from Kirkintilloch, Wallace moved to Australia in the twilight of his career to play with Apia. After a brief stint back home, he emigrated to Australia for good in 1977 and now resides on the Gold Coast. He’s not alone. Frank Haffey, an eccentric and affable goalkeeper for both Celtic and Scotland, also started a new life in Australia – eventually becoming a cabaret singer. Former Celts who have had spells playing in Australia include Bobby Petta, Juninho, Dixie Deans, Joe Miller and Simon Lynch.

    ANY HOOPS STARS FROM AUSTRALIA?
Celtic’s current star striker Scott McDonald hails from Melbourne. The son of Scottish parents, McDonald followed Celtic from afar as a kid and has fulfilled a lifelong ambition of donning the Hoops. His 31 goals helped Celtic to the league title in 2008 and he followed in the footsteps of fellow Australian Mark Viduka – who scored 35 goals in 18 months with Celtic between 1998 and 2000. They were almost joined in flying the Australian flag at Celtic by goalkeeper Danny Milosevic. He signed for Celtic in January 2004 as back-up to Rab Douglas, but eventually left the club without even dirtying his gloves, citing personal problems. His timing wasn’t perfect, coming just days before Celtic’s second leg UEFA Cup tie with Barcelona, yet it proved perfect for David Marshall, who rose to prominence with a starring role in the Nou Camp.

IS IT A PROUD FOOTBALL NATION?
It’s probably best just to describe Australia as a proud sporting nation – one of the proudest in the world, in fact. Football is growing in popularity every year, especially with the top players starring overseas and the national A-League increasing in quality, but it still lags behind the big four sports of cricket, Aussie Rules football, rugby league and rugby union. Yet there are encouraging signs. The Aussies have now qualified consecutive World Cups – 2006 and 2010 – and McDonald, Viduka, Tim Cahill, Harry Kewell et al are helping raise the profile of the beautiful game. Given their legendary competitive streak, it might not be too long before the Socceroos are really making their mark at the highest level.

    DID YOU KNOW…
The legendary George Best pulled on the Hoops for a match while on a visit to Australia. The Irishman lined up for a CSC and wore the club’s centenary strip for the game. Whether he scored or not is unknown, but we’re sure he would have done justice to the Hoops. On another subject, Celtic striker Georgios Samaras could have played for Australia. The striker’s grandfather, also Georgios, was involved in the formation of successful football club South Melbourne Hellas and the Celt’s father Giannis was born in Australia. Yet, the young Georgios opted to play for the country of his own birth – Greece.

    Starting lineup is...
    1 BORUC, Artur
    2 HINKEL, Andreas
    3 NAYLOR, Lee
    5 CALDWELL, Gary
    22 LOOVENS, Glenn
    13 MALONEY, Shaun
    16 FLOOD, Willo
    17 CROSAS, Marc
    20 MCCOURT, Paddy
    7 MCDONALD, Scott
    33 KILLEN, Chris

    I imagine it's a 4-4-2 like this

    -------------------Boruc----------------------
    Hinkel------Caldwell---Loovens---------Naylor
    -------------------Crosas--------------------
    Maloney-------Flood-----------------McCourt
    -------------McDonald----Killen--------------

Only ex-Ranger starting is Moore, who the least bad of the three.

I only have audio on Channel 67, so don't ask for a link.

They've got a cool thing where this 12 year old Aboriginal is playing the didgeridoo with a couple of guys playing bagpipes.

Our midfield is incredibly lightweight... and Aussies are notoriously athletic, save for Skippy of course. lol.
