Agreed. From what I have seen he is OK but I am not especially impressed. He is one of those many players who get loads of press far too early in their career. The crucial thing is he is very good...'for his age', not amazing per se. The amount of times that doesnt translate into a great mature player is unreal. Think about all the previous Celtic prodigys who got press like they were a world class prospects then failed. The only difference is McCarthy had the good sense to get 1st team games in a smaller club rather than rot in the reserves at a big team.

Overhyped IMO, a lot of the publicity is about him being a Celtic supporter and about his controversial move re: choice of country to represent. That stands out more than any performances I have seen from his as yet. He is a good prospect and only about 2% of them become great players so we shouldnt be paying a big fee or wages. IMO he is nowhere near as good as a young McStay or even a young Liam Miller. Is he really any better than young Ferry or Mark Miller?

I would say it would be unfair to compair him to McStay , Also Miller didnt really break into our team until he was 21 Mccarthy is 3 years younger and already got 90 games under his belt who is to say he isnt better.

We don't need a stack of CM-s, sorry. If he isn't left-footed, we don't have a place for him. I prefer we shifted our sights away from SPL.

McCarthy has been receiving hype before he declared for Ireland. He certainly has potential and whether it develops depends on the players attitude and whether the right attitude can be maintained, how he is trained and whether he gets games.

The only fear about Celtic buying him is that his development is stifled by a lack of games. Buy & Loan back (with recall clause) would be the right thing to do if management knew that they werent going to give him alot of game time.

He cannot go back to reserve football

This is the main reason we shouldn't be buying him. We're filled in midfield, and he couldn't get a game. He'd do us more favor being at Hamilton and trying to mess with Rangers. Riordan is an ex-Celt, and he messed the Huns badly.

What does it matter if he is left sided or not, naka is left sided and plays on the right.

Celtic obviously has plans to change about their midfield.

    Hartley - Backup
    Brown - 1st choice
Robson - Abductor muscle injury could spell the end of this guy's mobility - backup
    Crosas - Inconsistent & lightweight - Rotation
    Donati - Will be sold
    Ferry - Not Good Enough
Flood - Preferred for right midfield - Backup

Yes, we are NOT overflowing with good options for CM

Don't know about Ferry, maybe he's good. And we have too much wingers, Flood may play CM.

I hope we do get the kid, he looks the business for 18, and you dont attract the kind of interest he has if you are not cutting it.

As for the CMs at CP, I dont think we are exactly overflowing at the minute. Hartley is edging towards past it, if he even stays, Donati is for the off, Flood is a winger, Maloney is a winger, so I reckon that leaves Robson, Brown, Crosas and, fingers crossed, McCarthy.

Now, looking to the future, I would say we are sorted with 3 quality, young, CMs for the forseeable future, Broony being the eldest, so that cant be a bad thing, expecially for sell on value.

I'd be happy to see him in Paradise.
We have a few central midfielders but Brown and Crosas are the only ones I see with genuine quality.
I think he's as good as Hartley right now and he's only going to get better.
I'm not sure if he'd walk into the team and stay there but I think he would end up playing his fair share of games.
    Hope this happens.

Would be great to get some fresh young talent but he's not a million pound player yet and I suspect that's what they're holding out for :icon_mrgreen:
